WWE Wrestler of the Week: One Year Anniversary

Welcome to the one year anniversary of WWE Wrestler of the Week here on Camel Clutch Blog. It is such a great feeling to have written one column for this long and look back at all the WWE Wrestlers who have won the award. You can check out all the past winners (via guttwrenchpowerblog.com) here. So with the 52nd weekly edition, let’s take a look back at this past Smackdown and Raw, which included the Slammy awards.

Before we get to our winner, I would like to give an honorable mention to Roman Reigns. The member of the Shield did not have a match on Smackdown since Dean Ambrose elected himself as the one to face CM Punk that night. Ambrose did the same thing on Raw, but you can see the tension growing between him and Reigns. The Samoan Superstar was quite successful when it came to Slammy awards though. He walked away with four Slammys, mostly as part of the Shield, but also one for “What a Maneuver” of the Year thanks to his infamous spear.

However, there can only be one winner. This week’s winner is no stranger to the award and was also very successful when it came to Slammy awards. He is Daniel Bryan.

Bryan may have lost on Smackdown to Randy Orton, but that was only because of a distraction by the Wyatt Family. Monday was a much better night for Bryan. After defeating Fandango in the opening contest, Bryan received four Slammys. Bryan won for Couple of the Year (with Brie Bella), Catchphrase of the Year, Beard of the Year and Superstar of the Year.

It was really great to see Bryan win Superstar of the Year, but I have some thoughts on this. I was afraid John Cena would win. After all, he won the Royal Rumble, WWE Championship at WrestleMania and World Heavyweight Championship this year. But we can all see from fan reaction that Bryan is at such a high level of popularity now. The Slammy Awards also took place near Bryan’s hometown in Seattle. Do we think WWE did this on purpose? They could have predicted Bryan would win Superstar of the Year.

One thing I am sure WWE did not predict was the crowd’s chanting of Bryan during the final segment of Raw. Triple H was doing his usual shpeel about how much we should care for the unification match coming at WWE TLC 2013. The crowd didn’t care. They just wanted to chant for Bryan because that’s what the WWE Universe likes to do.

The final word about Bryan and the Slammy’s is more of a question – did anyone else notice and find it interesting that the Superstar of the Year award was given out in the middle of the show? The match of the year was the final award given out. In the past, the Superstar of the Year was seen as the best award and thus given out last. Perhaps, if John Cena had won…

In any case, Bryan is at an interesting place in the storylines. He was WWE Champion very briefly. Then demoted to feuding with the Wyatt Family. Hopefully, with the Royal Rumble and the Road to WrestleMania around the corner, Bryan enters the WWE Unification title picture soon. Until then, the Superstar of the Year and WWE Wrestler of the Week will just have to be the uncrowned champion of the company.
