Two weeks ago, the Rhodes Brothers (Cody and Goldust) were not employed by WWE and still won WWE Wrestler(s) of the Week. This week, they are WWE Tag Team Champions and once again winners of the weekly award. No other team in the division has been able to dethrone Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns until Cody and Goldy came along. Sure, they received some help from the Big Show, but a win is still a win.
Now back to the Rhodes brothers. On SmackDown, Cody and Goldust were victorious against the Wyatt Family’s Luke Harper and Erick Rowan. This is significant and impressive since the Wyatt Family has been on the winning end for all of their matches prior to this night. Both of these tag teams should be the focus in the division rather than members of the Shield.
Then there was Raw on Monday night. Twas the night that Cody and Goldust faced tag team champions Rollins and Reigns in the main event. For those of you who read the article two weeks ago, I was hoping the Rhodes brothers would continue as a tag team and challenge for the titles. After a knockout punch from Big Show to Reigns, Cody made the cover for the pin and the win. When was the last time WWE crowned new tag team champions on Raw? How about in the main event of Raw?
Some people may think the Shield will just win back the titles in the near future from the Rhodes brothers, but as you can probably guess, I hope not. First, the Shield does not need titles to be relevant in the WWE. Second, the tag team division is deep enough that they don’t need to be a part of it. Finally, this is an opportunity to break up the Shield.
Whenever the Shield does break up I have a feeling people will complain that it happened too soon. However, all three superstars have bright futures ahead of them so I am not worried. The Rhodes brothers, on the other hand, are in a different situation.
Goldust has been great lately, but he is 44 years old. Cody has never been in a world title picture, but he has found a great deal of success as a midcard champion and tag team specialist. No matter how long this title reign lasts, it is one that all families, especially the Rhodes will enjoy.
