WWE Wrestler of the Week: January 17th – 23rd, 2014

Oh you didn’t know? You better call somebody. Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, children of all ages – Camel Clutch Blog proudly brings to you its WWE Wrestler of the Week! I am pretty sure I have introduced the winner this way before, but this week is very appropriate. Why? Because the returning Road Dogg and Billy Gunn aka New Age Outlaws are the WWE Wrestlers of the Week.

The Outlaws returned to WWE once again on Old School Raw a couple weeks ago, but remained on screen. Of course, out of the ring, both Dogg and Gunn are working for WWE. Road Dogg is an agent and Gunn is an NXT trainer. However, WWE is utilizing their Attitude Era popularity with today’s stars. Plus, with Triple H’s push for a valuable tag team division, the Outlaws had some work to do.

After turning their backs on CM Punk, the Outlaws have seemingly turned heel, which is totally acceptable. WWE has tons of babyface tag teams – the Rhodes Brothers, Los Matadores, Prime Time Players, R-Truth and Xavier Woods and the Usos. How many heel teams? I can think of the Real Americans and the Wyatt Family as the only legit ones. I am not counting 3MB; I’m just not doing it.

The New Age Outlaws were given a non-title match against the Rhodes brothers this past week on Smackdown. It’s interesting as the feud goes on that three out of four wrestlers are from the Attitude Era. Goldust is having an unbelievable comeback, but his roots are in the Attitude Era. Therefore, the biggest winner in this feud is Cody Rhodes. Unfortunately for Cody though, he was rolled up by Gunn for the win.

Going back to their actions against Punk, Gunn had the unfortunate duty of facing the Straightedge Superstar one on one this past Monday on Raw. Although the Outlaw lost, it was still a good match. Road Dogg spent the match on commentary where I always thought he would be a perfect fit.

So how did the Outlaws win this award after such a question win-loss record? It might have to do with the fact that they will be challenging the Rhodes brothers for the tag team titles during the Kickoff to Royal Rumble on Sunday. I am very intrigued by this match. The Outlaws winning the titles would be great to see from the point of view of any Attitude Era fan. Also, take in consideration the place that the Rhodes brothers are in.

The Royal Rumble kicks off the Road to WrestleMania, which means that if a Goldust versus Cody Rhodes match is in the works, then this Sunday is where the split could begin. We have yet to see any tension between the brothers, other than both wanting to win the rumble match. This may mean that WWE isn’t going to have them face off at the show of shows, but many people (including Goldust) would like to see it happen.

Although the Outlaws make an interesting argument to become the new tag team champions, I don’t see it happening. They are legends who have come back seemingly to put over Cody Rhodes and Goldust as a team. The Real Americans actually deserve to be the ones to end the Rhodes brothers’ reign, whenever that may be. From there, hopefully the Usos get a run. In any case, the Outlaws becoming number one contenders and stirring the pot with CM Punk earn them the honors of WWE Wrestlers of the Week.

Who do you think deserves WWE Wrestler of the Week? Will the New Age Outlaws become six time tag team champions? Please share your thoughts in the comment section below.
