WWE Wrestler of the Week: August 23rd – 29th, 2013

The Miami Heat won back-to-back championships in 2012 and 2013 and now Daniel Bryan has won back-to-back WWE Wrestler of the Week awards. The new top babyface of WWE has continued to be the focus of both Raw and Smackdown, as evident from this week’s shows.

Before we break down the week that Bryan had, it is time to give an honorable mention. Other than Bryan, the only other candidate for WWE Wrestler of the Week was the tag team of the Prime Time Players.

Darren Young and Titus O’Neil have been receiving a push as of late and it is extremely obvious why. Approximately two weeks ago, Young came out to the WWE Universe via TMZ and became the first openly gay WWE Superstar. Young’s announcement resulted in WWE turning the Prime Time Players face for the first time.

The Prime Time Players are having a midcard tag team feud with Zeb Colter’s Real Americans. This week it was all PTP as Young and O’Neil were successful in singles competition against Antonio Cesaro and Jack Swagger, respectively. If the Prime Time Players’ momentum can lead to a tag team title run, they will not be in the honorable mention part of this article.

In other news, Daniel Bryan could be WWE Champion as early as Night of Champions. On the August 23rd edition of Smackdown, Bryan invoked his rematch clause for the WWE title at the next pay-per-view event. Bryan was also successful in the main event of Smackdown against Wade Barrett.

I am not so sure why we continue to see Barrett used as the henchman to lose to Bryan each week, but WWE should utilize other superstars on the roster. In any case, although it was a steel cage match, Bryan won via pinfall. Despite Randy Orton attacking Bryan after the match, WWE’s resident Yes man continues to be on a roll.

That roll continued into Monday night Raw when Bryan defeated The Shield in a gauntlet match. Although the only legitimate part of the match was Bryan against Seth Rollins, it still says something that Bryan defeated The Shield. There was a time a few months ago when the Shield never lost.

Bryan is not only in the main event of shows, but has been opening them as well. He was in the opening segment of both Raw and Smackdown this week, along with Orton. On Raw, Triple H gave Orton a gift for being the new face of the company – a brand new car. However, Bryan did the right thing here and ruined the car by spray painting “YES” all over the car.

WWE is building the main event quite nicely heading into Night of Champions. Orton and Bryan are headlining both Raw and Smackdown. When John Cena or The Rock was WWE Champion, they never appeared on Smackdown. It was actually quite rare that CM Punk was on the blue show during his 434-day reign as champion. Bryan is certainly the biggest winner in WWE today and just like the Miami Heat, will try to three-peat this upcoming season so will The Beard.

Who do you think should be WWE Wrestler of the Week? Can Daniel Bryan three-peat? Can the Prime Time Players be future tag team champions? Please share your thoughts in the comment section below.
