WWE Wrestler of the Week: August 16th-22nd, 2013

Seth Guttenplan 3:16 says I just brought back another edition of WWE Wrestler of the Week. This week was full action that included Smackdown, Raw and even the 26th annual SummerSlam pay-per-view. Now, when considering this week’s winner, one might think Randy Orton. Others could make an argument for Alberto Del Rio or even Rob Van Dam. You may disagree with this one, but this week’s biggest winner has to be Daniel Bryan.

[adinserter block=”1″]Before we get to the controversy and “burying” of Bryan, let’s review his entire week. On Smackdown, Bryan defeated Wade Barrett in a no disqualification match. Triple H entered at the end, making himself referee and making the three count.

At SummerSlam, Bryan did something unthinkable. He did something unbelievable. He did something only The Rock has done in recent history. Bryan cleanly pinned John Cena. Bryan became WWE Champion at SummerSlam. Of course, we all know Triple H turned on Bryan, helping Randy Orton cash in and become the even newer WWE Champion. Still, Bryan can say he cleanly defeated John Cena and became champion.

Although Bryan did not have a match on Raw, he was the focal point. Cena opened the show to say goodbye due to shoulder injury, but as he was leaving he did something for Bryan. Cena basically passed the torch of top babyface. With Cena out for 4-6 months, Bryan is the new face of WWE. He may have ended Raw flat on his face due to an RKO, but Bryan will be biggest winner in the whole situation.

When you think back of when Stone Cold Steve Austin was feuding with Mr. McMahon and the Corporation, how many times did Austin get knocked down? The better question is how many times did Stone Cold Steve Austin become WWE Champion during that time?

Triple H and the McMahons are seemingly introducing a new corporation group. Bryan is getting the odds stacked against him, but it is most likely in order to build to a huge moment. Bryan and Orton will likely have a rematch at Night of Champions for the WWE title. Once again, I expect the new corporation – Corporate Evolution – to cost Bryan the title. Perhaps Triple H costs him the match to set up a fight between the two at one of the October pay-per-views.

The earliest I envision Bryan winning the WWE title is Survivor Series. However, the traditional 5 on 5 matches give Corporate Evolution the opportunity to set up a team against Bryan. Orton, The Shield and either Barrett or Triple H against superstars who will join Bryan. Maybe CM Punk, Big Show and Mark Henry. By the Raw after WrestleMania 30, Bryan should be WWE Champion again.

Triple H is not burying Daniel Bryan. Corporate Evolution is making everyone want Bryan to be champion. With Cena out for the next number of months, the focus is all on Bryan. If WWE didn’t believe in Daniel Bryan, the American Dragon would not be the one feuding with Corporate Evolution right now. From Cena losing to leaving, Daniel Bryan has become the biggest winner and the WWE Wrestler of the Week.
