WWE WrestleMania 33: Randy Orton vs. Bray Wyatt Must Deliver

Now that wrestling fans have witnessed arguably the greatest promo since CM Punk’s time bomb, what happens now between Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt.

Like all good things, there are consequences for changing direction, and in discussing the confrontation between Orton and Wyatt, I wonder what happens to both AJ Styles and Luke Harper. Actually, Styles will be fine as a match at WrestleMania 33 will more than likely come in the form of Shane McMahon as an opponent or the emergence of Nakamura as his proxy. Harper is another story.

As I have discussed with many of my blogging friends, I wasn’t jazzed about the idea of AJ Styles and Luke Harper wrestling once again this past Tuesday. The ending was anti-climactic and neither wrestler seemed to have chemistry. What could have been a really solid angle (as Sarah Hirsch pointed out to me) between Styles and Wyatt has now shifted to Orton and WWE’s World Champion. The company may have gotten the right main event, but the fallout may hurt the card.

What WWE did by finally pulling the trigger on Randy Orton’s turn, is create a few more questions that must be answered in the next few weeks.

I’m more than excited about the potential that and Orton versus Wyatt match brings to Wrestlemania 33, but in creating such a buzz, the brilliance of Styles is diminished. Also the growth and development of Harper is stunted. If the company pulls another rabbit out of his hat and decides to make this a fatal four-way match, which may still be an option, it destroys the brilliance of what we saw Tuesday night.

I for one would love to see a triple threat-type match between Orton, Wyatt and Harper. In reality it does not maximize the value of the Eater of Worlds and The Viper. And for everything that Harper has become – or has not been able to develop – has once again been squashed in a way only WWE can accomplish.

There are so many great things to talk about when discussing the Orton-Wyatt segment from Tuesday night. The brilliance of The Viper, The kryptonite effect on Wyatt’s character. The mention of Sister Abigail. The old school style of an angle that works perfectly. I could go on about how great that was. Yes, I was one of those watching in getting chills because it was so flawless.

I’m just like every other wrestling fan when a great feud comes together. I’m just like every other wrestling fan who gets excited when one of their favorites, and in this case two favorites, tears the roof off the building. And I am just like every other fan and get disappointed when this company sacrifices something good for something great. There has to be a way to connect the dots.

This company has four weeks to fit all the puzzle pieces in place. Some of the angles that have taken shape, like Orton and Wyatt, like Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens, like Triple H, Seth Rollins and Samoa Joe. Add Dean Ambrose and Baron Corbin to this list.

Wrestlemania is never perfect, which makes the event that much more appealing to me. In this case however, there is a chance to create something special. But for a company that is still learning to swim in the deep end with its brand extension, the pendulum must swing at an even pace.

There is no doubt in my mind that and Orton vs. Wyatt in the main event in Orlando will steal the show. There is no doubt that other matches already on the books will do more than scintillate. But for the mission to be complete, wrestlers like Styles and Harper deserve a better fate than they will be handed. While they deserve better because of their greatness, fans awaiting such an event deserve better as well. Anything short of brilliance in the main event will destroy the pain staking process it took to get to this point – which could be the best angle we have seen in some time.
