WWE WrestleMania 32 Rumors and Possible Main-Event

John Cena and Roman Reigns

The WWE is continuing to shuffle its WrestleMania 32 card. With less than six months to go and a major injury to the WWE champion, the company is regrouping with one interesting matchup currently on the book.

Dave Meltzer has the latest report in the new edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Meltzer reports that one key main-event penciled in on the card may be in jeopardy due to recent events surrounding the WWE world title. A main-event that I predicted here awhile back and one that I think is very intriguing.

Meltzer reports that John Cena vs. Roman Reigns is currently the plan going into WrestleMania. Meltzer does not know whether that plan was part of a bigger idea to turn Reigns heel or not. Meltzer speculates that it could have easily been a face vs. face match, which I think would have produced a fascinating dynamic among the polarizing crowd. With creative scrambling after Seth Rollins’ injury, that match may not stick.

Meltzer says that the objective of this show, like last year is to make Reigns the top star of World Wrestling Entertainment. Unfortunately the company missed their goal big time last year when it failed to meet the same objective. I don’t know that Reigns wrestling Cena does that immediately, but it certainly positions Reigns in that spot.

My prediction is that the match sticks. I strongly sense that they are going with a Reigns heel turn at Survivor Series, which makes the match even more predictable. With Reigns as heel champion, he could wrestle Dean Ambrose through January, Brock Lesnar at the Royal Rumble (or SummerSlam), and then Cena at Mania. The trajectory makes a lot of sense, especially with Rollins on the sidelines for a while.

Here is where things get tricky. The Undertaker vs. Broik Lesnar was also booked to take place on WrestleMania, but plans suddenly changed and the match was expedited. Most reports at the time pegged the move on Vince McMahon, reporting that Vince had something big planned for Brock at Mania. Other than Reigns or a match with Dwayne Johnson or Steve Austin, there doesn’t seem to be a good reason for that change. Mind you, a lot has been invested in this booking change as the WWE had to pay Brock for extra dates. Thus, one would have to presume it’s bigger than Reigns.

Another rumored match for WrestleMania has been John Cena vs. Undertaker. This is an annual rumor, but it had some legs a few months back. Meltzer reports that his sources have adamantly denied the match is on the books. Maybe so, but with the current change in booking plans it wouldn’t surprise me to see it wind up on the card. Anything can change at this point, yet generally Vince sticks to his WrestleMania plan by this point in the year barring injuries.

Finally, Meltzer confirms what I have written about as speculation for awhile and that is there was a Seth Rollins vs. Triple H match on the books for WrestleMania. This match was rumored going all the way back to the summer, possibly even taking place at SummerSlam. I am not convinced that Rollins is a 100% out for Mania, although he’d have to beat the odds to be there. With Rollins out and Rock unable to wrestle, this leaves Hunter without any kind of a suitable opponent. I suppose they could keep Reigns face and build to something, but that won’t help the company meet its goal of making Reigns the top guy.

It is going to be real tough to fill AT&T Stadium and live up to the hype with the current roster. Creative has to try something new and whether people like it or not, Reigns vs. Cena is new. With Reigns going heel (my prediction), the match makes sense for everyone involved.

The only thing anyone can really confirm at this point is that things will become much more predictable after the Survivor Series.
