The 30th WrestleMania WWE event is just days away and I thought it would be fun to offer my predictions but with a bit of a twist. Rather than state the obvious I want to take a look at several scenarios that we could see Sunday in NOLA.
At the same time if they do happen I’d expect you to call me a genius of course. With that said, let’s take a look into my crystal ball and see what stunning surprises may come our way at the big event.
Brock Lesnar ends the streak – It’s a funny thing booking The Undertaker’s streak heading into WrestleMania. It seems like such an easy story yet the angles for the match have been terrible for the last three years. This year’s should have been the easiest to book and while the angle isn’t nearly as weak as last year’s or even the year before, there is definitely money being left on the table.
There are no signs pointing to Brock Lesnar ending the streak. Why would anyone think he will or could? He lost last year at Mania to Triple H and most fans, even casual fans know he is a part-timer. The chances that the streak would end at the hands of an outsider are minimal and everyone knows it. Brock winning would be interesting but there is no payoff in the way that this angle has been set up. We already know that Brock doesn’t need to win, so why would he? At least that is what Paul Heyman has told us numerous times.
CM Punk returns – There has been a lot of buzz the last few days surrounding CM Punk and a possible return at WrestleMania. Speculation heated up after Stone Cold Steve Austin and Terry Funk both predicted that Punk would be at Mania. I on the other hand would be absolutely shocked if the self-proclaimed “Best in the World” rears his head in NOLA.
I am tired of arguing with people on social media who believe this whole thing is one big work. It’s not. That isn’t to say that things haven’t been worked out but there is definitely no work here. There are only two scenarios I see for Punk at Mania. One would be coming out and costing Triple H the match and showing up on RAW the next night to challenge Daniel Bryan, telling Bryan he owes him one. The other and I think this could turn into a classic Mania moment is Punk coming out and teasing that he is going to attack Trips only to turn around and cost Bryan the match. Somehow or another Triple H repays him by giving Punk his spot in the Triple Threat Match and Punk wins, leaving New Orleans as the hottest heel in years.
Unfortunately for you Punk fans I don’t see either scenario playing out. I think he is done, especially after news broke of his engagement to Divas champion AJ Lee.
Randy Orton retains the WWE world championship – There are a lot of potential outcomes I could see in the WrestleMania main-event. Some of these outcomes may not even involve any of the four we believe are involved in the match (see the Punk scenario). One outcome I would be shocked to see is Randy Orton retaining the WWE world title in New Orleans.
That said I don’t think it is as much of a given as some think regarding Daniel Bryan winning the WWE world championship. It almost seems way too predictable and obvious to believe. Don’t get me wrong. I think that is the best move for business but it just seems too easy. Maybe they have Triple H lay Bryan out after their match and the Authority immediately starts the title match, thus putting Bryan at a disadvantage? I also still question whether Batista was promised the WWE world title at WrestleMania upon returning, thus boxing the WWE into a corner. Orton on the other hand would make no sense and has proven that he is not capable of drawing numbers as a top heel champion. It pains me to say it as an Orton fan but the truth is in the numbers.
Bray Wyatt defeats John Cena – Speaking of obvious, the obvious result here is Bray Wyatt winning right? Well yes but not when the babyface is John Cena and not when the match is on WrestleMania. As easy as this is to book, I think this is one where the fans aren’t going to get what they want.
One of the things I look for in predicting a match is how the angles were booked the last two weeks. Did John Cena get the best of Bray or did Wyatt get the best of Cena? Quite honestly it has been Bray Wyatt getting the best of Cena all along. Sure, Cena had the deal last Monday where he got the better of other Wyatt members but he hasn’t gotten the best of Bray yet. That tells me that the company is saving Mania for that moment.
I also think that the crowd reaction won’t be what the WWE would want to see if Cena got beat. Let’s be honest. The whole arena would be standing up and going nuts for Wyatt if he beat Cena. That isn’t how you want to see fans react to your top heel. I think that Cena gets a win here and Bray gets one back at Extreme Rules.
Triple H defeats Daniel Bryan – This brings me back to the Triple Threat Match discussion. The result is so obvious here that anything else but Bryan winning is unacceptable right? I don’t think so. Again, don’t misunderstand me. I think you have to put Bryan over here but I also think there are ways that you can put Triple H over and get Bryan over in the process.
