WWE announced that they will crown the first ever United Kingdom Champion in a 16-man tournament coming to the WWE network this upcoming January in Blackpool. The event will be a special, two-night single elimination tournament on Saturday, January 14 and Sunday, January 15, 2017 beginning at 8:00 PM GMT.
At the latest press conference at the O2 arena in London, WWE Executive Vice President of Talent, Live Events & Creative, Triple H stated: “Our passionate U.K. fans deserve to have their own champion”. He further argued that he has imagined this championship for over 2 years, and believes it will be the key into exploiting WWE’s global network, and give opportunity to develop another brand which the fans are desperate for.
This unpredictable event will highlight the best competitors from all four home nations of the United Kingdom, and Ireland, there is to offer. Which will surely exploit the British style of wrestling and give the brand well deserved recognition.
The WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament on the WWE Network will unsurprisingly be called by WWE lead announcer Michael Cole. However, he will be joined by colour analyst Nigel McGuinness, a veteran from the UK independent scene, who will certainly brighten up the commentary team with his egotistic personality and charisma.
Competitors to look out for:
Billing in at 6’0’’ tall and weighing at 235 lbs, one of the bigger competitors in the tournament. Recognized by his Full Nelson Slam finishing maneuver, the Worcester born superstar has relished his magnificent career having wrestled for over 30 different promotions. Including his run for Grand Pro Wrestling, where he held the GPW British championship and GPW Heavyweight championship which he held for 259 days.
This all-rounder from Glasgow, Scotland has appreciated a 14-year long career in the industry, giving a definite experience factor going into this tournament. Well known as one of the faces of British Championship Wrestling, Wolfgang has held over 10 individual championships in his journeyman career, including his 314-day run as BCW Heavyweight champion. The Scot will be a major threat for other competitors in this tournament, specializing in several different wrestling formats, making him an instant favorite.
The self-proclaimed ‘perfect’ Pete Dunne, hails from Birmingham, England and will be confident he can exploit his ‘Techniker’ wrestling style in this competition to guide him to victory. The inaugural and current Pro Wrestling Kingdom Champion, isn’t shy when it comes to succeeding. Having held the PWK championship for nearly 4 years, no opposition is yet to defeat him. One of the greatest UK wrestlers today, his excellent in-ring ability and heel persona will impress everyone at WWE.
Trent Seven and Tyler Bate:
Known as ‘Moustache Mountain’ this prolific British tag team from Wolverhampton, Birmingham and Netherton, Dudley respectively are no slouches in the squared circle. Building their careers upon their hard-hitting maneuvers, the two moustached men regard themselves as ‘Suplex Specialists’. Both men have enjoyed worldwide careers, both wrestling for companies such as ATTACK! Pro Wrestling and CHIKARA, where they are the current CHIKARA Campeonatos de Parejas Champions.
One of the more underrated competitors in the Tournament, billing from Bray, Ireland. Devlin was trained and has wrestled former WWE Universal champion Finn Balor, and will be looking to execute everything ‘the Demon’ taught him before his success in the WWE. Although, hasn’t held many championships in his 10-year career, he has wrestled for over 10 different promotions, including British Championship Wrestling.
Other competitors in the 16-man tournament include Tucker, Roy Johnson, Joesph Conners, HC Dyer, Jack Starz, Sam Gradwell, James Drake, Dan Moloney, Chris Tyler, Sam Huxley, Ringo Ryan, and Tiger Ali. Two of the competitors will be alternates.
