The WWE closed out 2015 on pay-per-view with the 7th edition of Tables, Ladders, and Chairs. The gimmick-laden event saw a new intercontinental champion and a predictable result in the main-event which saw Sheamus retain the WWE world title over Roman Reigns, yet it was Reigns that may have finally gotten over with losing.
While TLC looked rather weak on paper I have to say that it was a real fun show. The gimmicks certainly added an element of excitement desperately needed on the event. The crew also worked real hard and I can’t say anything was real bad while most matches were pretty-very good. As for the main-event, the guys tried real hard yet something just seemed to be missing from bell to bell between Sheamus and Roman Reigns. That may change the next time Roman Reigns gets in the ring.
Sheamus defeated Roman Reigns to retain the title. These guys worked real hard yet the crowd just never really seemed to connect the way most WWE crowds would in this kind of a WWE championship match. The finish came when Reigns hit Sheamus with a Superman punch and started to climb up the ladder. Alberto Del Rio and Rusev ran down to attack Reigns. Reigns finally fought back but ate a Brogue Kick after getting back into the ring. Sheamus climbed the ladder, retained the title, and chapter two began.
Reigns snapped after the match. Reigns cleared the League of Nations by spearing them at the same time and then went ballistic on Sheamus with a chair. The Authority came out to end the destruction and Triple H got into the ring. Reigns stood back but eventually attacked the C.O.O. Reigns wound up beating Triple H up with a chair. Triple H was fantastic here, selling it like nobody else could. Roman then put him through a table with a power bomb and a flying elbow. Reigns started heading back and came back out to spear Hunter as he finally stood up. This was the angle I always thought should have been executed the day after WrestleMania. The announcers played it up as if Roman was going to be fired. Regardless, Roman snapped and he was more over at the end of the night than he has been in awhile.
The closing angle clearly sets up Roman Reigns vs. Triple H for WrestleMania. I predicted a few weeks back that the company could go with Reigns vs. HHH and Sheamus vs. Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania. I think that’s where this thing is going. I can only say this and that is if Roman Reigns isn’t over like crazy on Monday night’s RAW than I don’t think he’s ever getting over as a babyface. This was the “animal” he was portrayed as in the Shield, the character that got him over and if they stick with it, he could be exactly where they want him at WrestleMania.
Dean Ambrose defeated Kevin Owens to win the WWE intercontinental title. Ambrose was a bit of a surprise, in my opinion, although the sports books that put out WWE lines had Ambrose as the favorite. The finish came when Ambrose rolled up Owens out of a pop-up powerbomb attempt in a pretty decent match. Hopefully, Ambrose has a better reign with the I-C title than he had with the U.S. belt.
The Wyatt family survived an eight-man elimination Tables Match against Team Extreme. It came down to Strowman, Wyatt, and Harper against Bubba Ray. Bubba squirted lighter fluid on the table and was about to put Bray through before Strowman came into the ring and put Bubba through for the win. The win sets up the Wyatts as strong heels heading into WrestleMania season. Bray has fought John Cena and the Undertaker in consecutive years. The big win here leads me to believe that the Wyatts are set up for something big at Mania.
