WWE Suspends Chris Jericho Indefinitely

Chris JerichoThe WWE is making headlines today for an international incident that took place in Brazil. Chris Jericho did something so egregious that he could have wound up in a Brazilian jail. Lucky for him he escaped Brazil with only a slap on the wrist by the WWE.

TMZ.com broke the story Friday morning with a report from Brazil. According to the report, Jericho was wrestling CM Punk when the match was immediately stopped. Here is how TMZ reported the incident that almost landed the Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla in an episode of Locked Up Abroad.

It all went down during a match between Jericho and C.M. Punk — who was proudly waving the flag in the ring. Jericho took the flag away, crumpled it up and kicked the flag out of the ring … and that’s when police stepped in and put a stop to the event.

According to the report, Jericho was given two options. Jericho was told to either apologize to the audience or go to jail. Jericho opted for choice #1 and apologized to the crowd, telling them he regretted his actions.

WWE immediately released a statement in which they announced that Jericho has been suspended indefinitely for the incident.

Chris Jericho has been suspended indefinitely due to an irresponsible act of denigrating the Brazilian flag at a WWE event in Sao Paulo on May 24. The WWE has apologized to the citizens and the government of Brazil for this incident.

Jericho responded on WWE.com with another apology.

“I made a bad judgment call in the course of entertaining [WWE] fans in Brazil,” Jericho told WWE.com. “I apologized to the people in the crowd for showing disrespect. It was a bad move,” Jericho said. “I did it with [our] fans’ entertainment in mind and I’ll accept the consequences for that.”

This isn’t the first international incident for the WWE. John Bradshaw Layfield goose-stepped at a German house show several years ago. The mocked walk could have landed JBL in jail, although he escaped without incident. Leon White wasn’t so lucky. Appearing on a television show in character as Vader, White attacked a host. White wound up detained in Kuwait for about a week after the incident.

I have to say that this was a pretty interesting move out of Jericho. Jericho is the lead singer in the heavy metal band Fozzy. Heavy metal is still pretty big in Brazil. Jericho completely disregarded his night job by angering himself to the Brazilian people. I can’t imagine that Jericho will get a polite reaction if Fozzy were ever able to play Rock In Rio.

I can’t imagine that Jericho will be suspended for too long. For Jericho, he is on the way out for a short hiatus anyway. While it may make sense to start Jericho’s vacation now, my money is that the WWE makes an angle out of this and we see clips on RAW Monday, and Jericho back the next week.
