This Sunday, WWE will present the 26th edition of SummerSlam live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. One year ago, I began writing my predictions for WWE pay-per-views and I started out very well. As you can see here, I correctly predicted six out of the seven matches at last year’s SummerSlam.
Hopefully, this year I will be just as successful, if not more. With that said, let’s take a look at each of the scheduled matches for WWE SummerSlam 2013.
United States Championship: Dean Ambrose © vs. Rob Van Dam (Kickoff Match)
After winning a 20-man battle royal on Raw, Rob Van Dam gets the honor of challenging The Shield’s Dean Ambrose for the United States title. I expect this to be a very entertaining match, but the outcome is obvious. RVD is in WWE to be in a similar role as Chris Jericho. He is there to put on some great matches and put other superstars over.
Prediction: Dean Ambrose
Natalya vs. Brie Bella
What can one say about this Total Divas match? WWE is wise to capitalize on the success of Total Divas and put together this match. The one interesting part of this match is how it will look when we watch it on Total Divas. Other than that, I just hope it is a quick match, which I completely expect it to. WWE could give Natalya the feel good win or continue to show off the Bellas as strong heels. Since Natalya deserves as many wins as possible, I will give her the nod here.
Cody Rhodes vs. Damien Sandow
This is one of the best feuds in WWE today. People may look at Punk vs. Lesnar and Bryan vs. Cena as the two main events, but Rhodes versus Sandow is the third main event in my eyes. This match should be for the World Heavyweight title, but I will get to that later.
Rhodes and Sandow will put on a great match, as both are very underrated in the ring. Because the Money in the Bank briefcase is not on the line, it makes me think Rhodes will leave victorious. Sandow doesn’t need to win this match since he holds the briefcase, but Rhodes needs to win to continue his momentum.
Prediction: Cody Rhodes
Dolph Ziggler and Kaitlyn vs. Big E Langston and AJ Lee
This match doesn’t intrigue me as much as it should. Ziggler had a terrible reign as World Heavyweight Champion and seems to be headed back to the midcard. His mic skills are just not that the main event level, though I wish the threesome with Big E and AJ lasted longer.
With that said, it’s hard to see where Big E Langston is headed in the WWE. He has spoken very little and hasn’t done much more. Regardless of who wins this match, we could see the two singles feuds continue, but it doesn’t accomplish anything. AJ will remain divas champion. Ziggler and Langston feuding with one another doesn’t help either one. Maybe Ziggler can’t do it on his own…
Prediction: Big E Langston and AJ Lee
Kane vs. Bray Wyatt (Ring of Fire Match)
Ring of Fire or Inferno match? Doesn’t really matter. This is a good feud that has been building since Money in the Bank. It’s only fitting that Wyatt’s first official match as Bray is against another creepy character in Kane.
The match should be great and although the ring will be surrounded by fire, the Wyatt Family could still get involved. Regardless, Wyatt should not lose his first match. Even by disqualification, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what happens.
Prediction: Bray Wyatt
World Heavyweight Championship: Alberto Del Rio © vs. Christian
It was very nice of WWE to give Christian his one more match. Even if it is in the least interesting world title match in WWE history. Del Rio is the most boring champion and Christian is past his prime.
That is why neither will leave Los Angeles as World Heavyweight Champion.
As I said earlier, Sandow and Rhodes are having a great feud. One that is much better than Del Rio and Christian’s. Sandow would make a much more interesting and entertaining champion than Del Rio. I can see a scenario where Christian does win, but is attacked by Del Rio, allowing Sandow to cash in.
However, a more ideal scenario involves Del Rio retaining his title against Christian. After the match, Ricardo Rodriguez should return and attack Del Rio, allowing Sandow to cash in. Regardless, it is time for the Sandow era on Smackdown.
Prediction: Alberto Del Rio retains World Heavyweight Championship; Damien Sandow cashes in Money in the Bank (NEW World Heavyweight Champion)
CM Punk (The Best) vs. Brock Lesnar (The Beast)
The feud between CM Punk and Paul Heyman finally comes to its’ climax in the Best vs. The Beast match at SummerSlam. Brock Lesnar will represent Heyman against Punk, which is where my issues with the match begin.
I know this will be a very good match. Punk’s matches are always entertaining, but I always find it difficult to invest in Lesnar matches.
At the same time, I wouldn’t be surprised if the feud does not end here. Lesnar against Punk could happen again at Survivor Series. In order for that to happen, Lesnar has to win here.
Prediction: Brock Lesnar
WWE Championship: John Cena © vs. Daniel Bryan
WWE has done a great job of building up Daniel Bryan’s big opportunity at the title against john Cena, but it should be bigger. Nonetheless, Bryan certainly deserves to win here, but that makes me weary that he won’t. There are also a number of side people who could get involved.
Triple H is the special guest referee. It was absolutely unnecessary and ruins the feud. Still, Triple H is sort of feuding with his father-in-law Mr. McMahon so we could see the chairman get involved too.
Then there is Randy Orton. He currently does not have a match at SummerSlam, but has continued to remind the WWE Universe that he holds Money in the Bank.
So what will happen? My guess is that Bryan does win the WWE title, but loses it right away to Orton. My friends at ProWrestlingPowerhouse.com suggested a scenario where Mr. McMahon uses Orton as his new corporate champion.
Prediction: Daniel Bryan wins the WWE Championship; Randy Orton cashes in Money in the Bank (NEW WWE Champion)
Also, The Shield’s Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins are not scheduled for the pay-per-view. But don’t be surprised if they have an impromptu tag title match against Big Show and Mark Henry. The Shield would retain in this scenario.
