WWE Royal Rumble 2014 Predictions and Analysis

This Sunday, January 26, 2014, emanating from the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, PA, WWE will be presenting the Royal Rumble PPV. Not only is the Royal Rumble one of the “Big Four” PPVs (Wrestlemania, Summer Slam, and Survivor Series being the others), it is the kickoff to the “Road to Wrestlemania.” The PPV has several under card matches, including Title matches, but the real headline match is the Royal Rumble match, where two wrestlers start, and every 90 seconds (used to be two minutes), another participant comes, until all 30 have entered. A competitor is eliminated when thrown over the top rope and BOTH feet touch the floor. The lone survivor is the winner, and goes on to face the champion at Wrestlemania.

This year’s edition is a bit different. This year we have Randy Orton as the unified champion, so this year’s winner won’t be able to choose which one he wants. Personally, I am not a huge fan of a unified champion. I mean, it just makes it harder for anyone lower on the card to even have a crack at a title shot.

Let’s face it. The Unified championship is going to go back and forth between two or three people: Orton, Cena, and Batista. The Glass ceiling still exists. Maybe one day, WWE will get the message that it is time to stop using established starts for big shows. I mean, they have to bring back the New Age Outlaws? The WWE needs to stop depending on established people. They’ll never learn.

Anyway, the overall buildup to this PPV has been pretty good. I am understanding the Wyatt Family angle a bit more. I am actually interested in the Bryan vs Wyatt feud. I think the buildup to Orton vs Cena was very well done, even though the “attack John Cena’s father” angle was done before ( http://youtu.be/Tc-3N24nWVE ) . The Rumble match buildup could have been a little better. I liked it better when they had contestants in qualifying matches to get into the Rumble.

In this blog, I will be previewing all of the matches, and the Rumble Match itself. I hope you will enjoy it.

KICKOFF MATCH: TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP: Cody Rhodes & Goldust (C) vs The New Age Outlaws

As I alluded to earlier, why on earth did WWE bring back a tired old act like the New Age Outlaws? I mean, it is fine for a special appearance or so, but have them get a title shot? What about the USOs? Where is their title shot? I realize that “Bad Ass” Billy Gunn and “Road Dogg” Jesse James are buddies with Triple H, but really? That’s what’s needed to get a title shot? I know the New Age Outlaws turned heel when they walked out on CM Punk, but I just think someone else should be in this match with the defending champions.

I expect this match to be a pretty decent match. Cody Rhodes, and Goldust (who could also be considered a throwback to a prior era) are capable of having a good match with the New Age Outlaws. I never thought of Billy Gunn as a very good wrestler, and I always thought he needed to be carried. Road Dogg was just alright, at least to me. They were just a fun tag team to watch.

Prediction: This is just a warm up match. I don’t expect the titles to change hands: Cody & Rhodes retain.

Daniel Bryan vs Bray Wyatt:

When I saw that Daniel Bryan finally joined the Wyatt Family after weeks of torture, and harassment, I thought this was the end for him as a character. Well, fortunately, I was wrong. Bryan cleverly out-foxed Bray Wyatt, as he just infiltrated the Family. I sensed that Bryan was not being sincere to the Wyatt Family when every time he took that Sister Abigail move, and had to walk to the back, he’d look at the crowd as if to say “I got this.” I just felt something was up. Of course, that cage match happened on Raw, and the true Daniel Bryan came through. Bray’s not happy, and so we have this match.

This sounds like we have a feud that will either end at Mania, or maybe go a little past Mania. I think this has been set up very well. I am starting to understand this Wyatt Family. I admit, I was not a huge fan at first. I had no idea what they were. Well, I am starting to get it. I think this will be a very good match. Bryan should have a very good match with Bray Wyatt. I do expect other members of the Family to interfere.

Prediction: I am thinking, outside of the Rumble, this should be the match of the night. I expect Daniel Bryan to have an awesome match with Bray Wyatt. I don’t think Wyatt is on Bryan’s level, but I think he can hold his own. I have noticed that in many WWE feuds, the heel wins the first round, so I think that Bray Wyatt will get the first win of this feud. Winner: Bray Wyatt.

Big Show vs Brock Lesnar:

My word. To steal a line from the Rock, why in the blue hell did they pick the Big Show for Brock Lesnar to feud with? I realize that Lesnar already feuded with Hunter, and CM Punk. I understand that. However, of all the superstars in the world, why the Big Show? The set up made me roll my eyes. One moment, Lesnar just “broke” the arm of Mark Henry, the “World’s Strongest Man,” and a couple of moments later, here comes the Big Show, and he gets in the ring, and throws Lesnar around like a rag doll. Isn’t Lesnar supposed to be the monster? I am no Lesnar fan by any means, but I didn’t get that.

Prediction: I am going to say that this match is the “bathroom break” match. I really do not expect much from Big Show. His days as a top guy are long gone. He had some talent, but I don’t think he can keep up with Lesnar. Lesnar is not my cup of tea, but he can go when motivated, and I think he will work hard in this match. I do expect Paul Heyman to get involved in this match to help his client. I PRAY that he gets involved. Heyman’s involvement would improve this match. Winner: Lesnar

WWE WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP: Randy Orton (C) vs John Cena

In their last meeting at the TLC PPV, Randy Orton defeated John Cena in a Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match. This time, per orders of Stephanie McMahon, the two will have their rematch, and it will be one fall to a finish. In other words, the only way to win is by pinfall, or submission. Of course, the “Viper,” Randy Orton was not happy hearing that, and has been a holy terror since. He has been taking his anger out on everyone, the Authority, other Superstars, and even poor John Cena, Sr.(John Cena’s father).

I am expecting a hard hitting match. I am going to guess that these two will put on a pretty good match. They have had very good to excellent matches against each other before. I expect that Orton will try to pull some shortcuts to try to win the match. I also hope that this is the end of Orton vs Cena for awhile. The WWE likes to try to make fans think that this is a new feud, but we fans all know that we have seen these guys fight each other a million times.

Prediction: This match is a hard one for me to call. It all depends on who will win the Rumble. On the go home Raw, Batista made his return, and told Orton that he was back for his chance to be the WWE World Champion. I do feel that Batista, whether he is the Rumble winner or not, will be the Champion at some point. That being said, I don’t see John Cena losing two in a row to Orton, but one can never tell what Vince is thinking. Prediction: I am going to go with Randy Orton retaining.

ROYAL RUMBLE MATCH:

Well, here is the headlining match. As I previously said, two participants enter, and every 90 seconds, another comes in until all 30 participants have entered. The last man standing is the winner. Many great wrestlers have won this classic match, such as Edge, John Cena, Stone Cold Steve Austin (3 Time winner, the most of all time), Bret Hart, The Undertaker, and so on. The Royal Rumble that I consider the best is the 1992 Match (albeit for the vacant WWE Title) where Ric Flair won. Great match. Wrestling greats such as a young Shawn Michaels, a young Undertaker, Hogan, Macho Man Randy Savage, Rowdy Roddy Piper, and many others participated in this match.

This year’s version is going to be interesting. Thanks to Kane’s edict, CM Punk is going to be #1. I think Punk will have to put on his carrying shoes, and carry some of the rest of the Superstars through the match, but he will do well. Will he break Rey Mysterio’s record? I don’t know. I do suspect there will be several surprise entrants. I am sure there are wrestlers working their fans on social media, saying they are going to be in the Rumble. Personally, even though I don’t think it will happen, but I would like to see Jericho return, but that’s me.

Prediction: I am sure that this match will be well worked. There will be some interesting plots going on. How long will the Shield keep their vow of unity? After all, the premise of the Rumble is every man for himself. I expect at least one, maybe two of the Shield members to be in the final four that are left. Will Roman Reigns break from his two Shield members? Will Dean Ambrose turn on the other two? How far can Punk go? Will Triple H himself enter? Will Batista win as many predict?

Winner: Batista is looking a bit too obvious. Of course, sometimes the obvious is the way to go. My pick is Batista to win the 2014. Personally, I hope it is Bryan, or Punk, but I am thinking it will be Batista.
