Let’s not waste time after my long absence and get into the WWE NXT Takeover Brooklyn results and ramifications…
ANDRADE “CIEN” ALMAS w/ ZELINA VEGA vs. JOHNNY GARGANO
GOOD BOOKING: Gargano is presented as a gutsy underdog.
Gargano has that Bryan Danielson factor. There’s no doubt about it. Gargano is just such a sympathetic presence that it’s almost hard to not root for him. Especially after Tommaso Ciampa’s double-cross. Gargano looked great in defeat, especially since it was exactly clean. There’s no doubt that Gargano will bounce back in no time, whether or not he continues to feud with Almas or not. Even if he loses his next feud/s until Ciampa’s return, his strong crowd connection is too much to ignore.
GOOD BOOKING: Zelina Vega gets involved; Almas wins.
Zelina Vega just may be a godsend for Almas. If Vega didn’t get involved, then the obvious question of “What’s the point of her being there?” would have been immediate. With this win, Almas is now finally on an upward trajectory. No doubt he’ll find himself in the title picture down the line. So long as WWE Creative is careful with how they book Zelina Vega. Creative has a habit of disbanding successful homegrown NXT pairings. For Almas’ sake, Vega needs to remain with Almas.
NXT TAG-TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP: THE AUTHORS OF PAIN (c) (W/ PAUL ELLERING) vs. SAnitY (ALEXANDER WOLFE & ERIC YOUNG w/ KILLIAN DAIN & NIKKI CROSS)
GOOD BOOKING: SAnitY utilizes the hell out of the Freebird rule; Eric Young replaces Killian Dain.
Killian Dain taking the bench spot was a pleasant surprise. It allowed Alexander Wolfe to shine a bit more and Eric Young to get back into the fray after his lengthy absence. With Dain on the side, the ring psychology was there as AoP now had to deal with Nikki Cross, who is willing to get physically involved, and the powerhouse nightmare of Dain on the outside.
GOOD BOOKING: SAnitY wins the titles.
This is a tough one. The AoP has taken on the numbers game before in the form of DIY and The Revival and has succeeded. SAnitY, if they had lost with the numbers on their side, would be in trouble of losing their credibility. With that being said, it might have always been SAnitY that was destined to beat the AoP. With no credible teams left, SAnitY winning the titles allows all-comers to challenge for the titles once again.
GOOD BOOKING: reDRagon debuts, makes a statement.
Not even joking, I was going to make a “State of NXT” post after this event and I was going to make a comment about how reDRagon members Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly would easily bolster the tag-team division. Boom! reDRagon debuts. And what a statement they made. Attacking the powerhouse AoP and the chaotic stable SAnitY is a hell of a way to start of their careers in NXT.
ALEISTER BLACK vs. HIDEO ITAMI
GOOD BOOKING: Aleister Black wins.
Black’s win was a necessity here. There’s something special about Aleister Black. There is no one like him in regards to in-ring action and persona. He is a star in the making, even if he ends up in the cruiserweight division. Nothing against Hideo Itami, but with the amount of time he missed due to injuries, it many have passed him by. Perhaps are continuing feud with Kassius Ohno will give him another chance at salvaging his WWE career.
NXT WOMEN’S TITLE: ASUKA (c) vs. EMBER MOON
QUESTIONABLE BOOKING: Asuka retains.
This was match of the night. Not even a question. So why does this get “Questionable” booking? Even though this was match of the night, Creative could have clearly gone either way. But one question seems to be the biggest influence; is the women’s division deep enough for Asuka to leave the main roster? We have Ember Moon, Nikki Cross, and Ruby Riot who are ready to carry the division in her absence. The Iconic Duo of Billie Kay and Peyton Royce are slowly making their way up there as well and with the Mae Young Classic under way, there will undoubtedly be an influx of new talent. Maybe they’re trying to push for a rare stable control with Nikki Cross gaining the women’s title and either Killian Dain or Eric Young winning the NXT title. Who knows? But for now, Asuka’s historic reign continues. And the question as to how she leaves for the main roster continues.
NXT TITLE: BOBBY ROODE (c) vs. DREW MCINTYRE
GOOD BOOKING: Drew McIntyre wins the title.
Second best match of the night. Bobby Roode did a fantastic job elevating the NXT title. All that’s left for him is to conclude his feud with Roderick Strong and it’s off to the main roster. But this storyline was more about Drew McIntyre’s redemption. Having won the NXT title puts McIntyre on the right track. One shouldn’t expect for McIntyre to hold onto the title for too long. He’s too developed to be in NXT for long.
GOOD BOOKING: Adam Cole.
Adam Cole has long since been one of the best talents to not be signed by WWE. It was a chilling image to see reDRagon waiting on the apron. But that was a far more compelling image of reDRagon and Cole standing over a fallen McIntyre. Ring of Honor has invaded NXT and it is going to be heighten NXT.
