Carmella vs Peyton Royce
A debut to start this week’s NXT as Australian Diva Peyton Royce makes her way into NXT to face Carmella. Each ladies exchange takedowns and headlocks before both attempting pins to start their bout. Carmella has control of the match before a suplex by Royce swings the bout her way. Carmella shows some aggression with a shoulder drive to the midsection and a boot to the face. Carmella plants Royce onto the mat before wrapping her leg round the debutants neck for a submission move. Royce quickly taps out to give Carmella a win to start the evening.
NXT then shows highlights of a match in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic between Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady versus Angelo Dawkins and Sawyer Fulton. The highlights didn’t show how good or bad the bout was, but Enzo and Cass won the match to advance to stage 2 of the tournament.
A second match that only showcased the highlights went next as Dash and Dawson took on Tucker Knight and Elias Sampson in the same tournament. Dash and Dawson won the match and booked their place in the second round.
Tyler Breeze and Bull Dempsey vs Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa
The random pairing of Dempsey and Breeze took on the debuting tag team of Gargano and Ciampa. Breeze and Dempsey showed cracks in their pairing before the match when Dempsey copied Breeze’s signature pose on the top rope, a move that angered Breeze. Breeze and Ciampa open the bout with a headlock which sets Breeze onto the top rope for his pose. Ciampa hits a huge slap on Breeze’s face which forces him to tag in Dempsey. Dempsey soaks up the crowd’s chants as he puts Ciampa on the floor. Breeze re-enters but finds himself on the receiving end of an impressive spear by Gargano. Ciampa hits a knee to Dempsey’s skull for a 2 count. Gargano dropkicks Breeze off the apron before Dempsey tries to tag in Breeze, much to the annoyance of Dempsey. He takes that out of Gargano with some punches and an elbow. Breeze makes it back to the apron but Dempsey accidentally knocks him back off. Dempsey is distracted, and is rolled up by Gargano, only for Ciampa to flip over and take Dempsey’s leg for an incredibly innovative roll up. Dempsey doesn’t kick out and Gargano and Ciampa win. Breeze attacks Dempsey after the match.
Notes – There was a lot of issues between Dempsey and Breeze during the match, and Breeze’s attack on Dempsey after almost certainly sets them up for a match in the future. Gargano and Ciampa looked fantastic, particularly Gargano who looked impressive flying around with spears and dropkicks. It was a decent match between the two teams, and the pin to win the match looked very impressive.
Billie Kay vs Dana Brooke
Dana Brooke starts by patronisingly tapping Kay on the head to which she replies by slowly stalking down Brooke until Brooke used the ropes to get the ref to intervene. Kay hits the first takedown of the match, putting Dana in a headlock. Brooke uses her power to take control with some smashes to the head and shoulder drives into the midsection. A couple of handstand moves, the first to press her foot into Kay’s neck and the second to drop an elbow into Kay’s midsection, as Dana takes control of the match. Dana wraps a headlock in with her legs before lifting Kay’s head up and dropping it in a sign of strength. Kay finds some momentum and hits clotheslines and a big boot. Dana gets Kay on her shoulders and plants her on the mat for a three count to win the match.
Notes – signs of chemistry between the two which could be explored again at some point in the future. Dana has some powerful moves in her locker and she executed them pretty well. Billie Kay looked really good and her height and athleticism blended together will make her a future champion, but right now she is still new and definitely missing a character that the crowd are going to root for.
Finn Balor and Samoa Joe vs Lucha Dragons
Notes – a brilliant main event. Kalisto and Sin Cara are always an exciting watch, but Balor and Joe worked tremendously as a team. Having two names like them team together added intrigue to the bout, and they lived up to it to form a formidable partnership. The commentary team referencing them training together in the past is something that could be used for them to form a tag team when they’re both on the main roster, but for now, it’s almost inevitable that Joe will turn on Balor eventually and set up a title match between the two soon.
Analysis – a show worth watching for the main event alone. If this match at a Takeover event for tag titles and had a little bit longer, it would probably steal the show. Chemistry between all four men showed, with both teams working brilliant as a team. Two women’s matches showcasing the next crop of women’s wrestling in NXT made up some of the show, while fans also got a chance to see a first NXT match for Ciampa and Gargano. Only highlights of a match containing Enzo and Cass was disappointing, but they qualified which will hopefully see their next match shown fully on NXT.
