WWE Night of Champions Predictions and Preview

WWE Night of Champions is the annual pay-per-view where every title is up for grabs. Okay, that’s almost every WWE pay-per-view nowadays, but you get the point. This year’s event has eight matches and here is a detailed prediction and outcome for each one.

The order the matches appear in here is the order they should take place in as well.

Neville and The Lucha Dragons vs Stardust and The Ascension

The Feud

Neville and Stardust have been at each others throats since before SummerSlam, but now, with Stardust beginning a new stable with The Ascension, this feud has been renewed and should serve to highlight the Cosmic Wasteland. A lot of this feud has taken place on Smackdown with only very short run-in’s on Raw. Neville and Stardust have put a lot of aggression into this feud and as long as the match reflects that, it should certainly surpass the average pre-show match.

The Match

It’s almost strange to see a pre-show match with so much talent in it. Given pre-show matches usually get a decent enough amount of time, this should be a good match with plenty high-paced spots to get the crowd energised.

What Should Happen

What should happen here is a match where Neville and The Lucha Dragons can show off their skills, but ultimately, it should be The Cosmic Wasteland that gets the win. Have Stardust hit the Queen’s Crossbow on Sin Cara after The Ascension take out Neville. The new stable needs a convincing victory.

What Will Happen

You just never know with WWE, they could see this as just a pre-show match to get the crowd hyped and therefore have the good guys win, but it still seems likely that they’ll have the Cosmic Wasteland be victorious.

United States Championship Match

Seth Rollins (c) vs John Cena

The Feud

Rollins and Cena had an outstanding feud in the lead up to SummerSlam. Unfortunately, it’s been mostly put on the back burner in favor of developing the WWE Championship match. Since SummerSlam, this feud has mostly consisted of tag team matches and Seth Rollins telling people how great he is. It’s not often you see a John Cena feud so out of the spotlight, with very little focus on the United States Championship itself.

The Match

This should be simple. Their SummerSlam match was incredible up until the interference and you should expect a similar quality of match here. The curiosity will be where on the card this match is. It seems logical to have this match start the show, but it would be interesting to make Rollins compete back to back. I doubt The Authority would do that to their golden-boy though.

What Should Happen

The WWE has two options here. One, put the title back on Cena clean and go the ‘will this be the worst night of Seth Rollins life’ angle, or they’ll have Seth retain here and have him drop the WWE Championship later in the night to either Sting or Sheamus. Either way, it seems unlikely that Seth will be leaving with two titles.

What they SHOULD do is have Cena win this match. No interference, just let the two do their thing. Cena wins by submission with Rollins knowing he has to tap out to avoid injury, so he can compete later in the night.

What Will Happen

I think the above will happen, Cena did a remarkable job as United States Champion and after Night of Champions, if Seth has to carry the two titles, the U.S. Title is likely to lose value. We should see the title back on Cena with the U.S. Open Challenge returning.

Tag Team Championship Match

The New Day (c) vs The Dudley Boyz

The Feud

There’s no arguably about it, The New Day are the hottest thing in WWE today and coming out of SummerSlam, any feud highlighting them was going to be a bonus, but nobody saw this coming. The return of Bubba Ray and D-Von blew the roof off the Barclays Center and from there, things just got better. The Prime Time Players, though entertaining, really just needed to be moved aside here. The New Day taking the angle of wanting to protect tables and talking up the “hard working, American” tables of history has been hilarious. However this ends, it has to continue beyond Night of Champions.

The Match

Because this feud needs to continue, don’t look for this match to be the five-star classic in the group. Expect this to be your pretty standard pay-per-view quality tag team match between four outstanding wrestlers. Also, Xavier Woods better be barking about tricep meat and playing the trombone on the outside.

What Should Happen

The New Day retains through some dubious means, Kofi pinning D-Von. The Dudleyz attack afterward and put someone through a table. Booking doesn’t get much easier.

What Will Happen

WWE could go the route of putting the titles straight onto the Dudleys, but they’ve already beaten New Day, The Ascension and the Prime Time Players clean since their return and the last thing WWE should do is make their current tag team division look worthless. The New Day should be kept as strong as possible and I think we’ll see the above prediction come true, setting up a you-know-what kind of match for the next pay-per-view.

Intercontinental Championship Match

Ryback (c) vs Kevin Owens

The Feud

This one has been your pretty standard WWE booking, the only thing really of note was the final promo on Raw with Kevin Owens bringing the book The Secret to the ring, highlighting how “weak” Ryback is for relying on such a book. Any time you give Kevin Owens a microphone, something good happens and that’s been the case here. Ryback certainly held his own as well.

The Match

Expect a hard-hitting fight here. This match is going to be a slow, grinding pace. Kevin Owens can certainly work a much faster, high-intensity pace, but in a match with Ryback, expect a slower grind. It will be interesting to see how Owens hits the Pop-up Powerbomb on someone of Ryback’s size.

What Should Happen

Kevin Owens defeats Ryback, wins his first title on the main roster and holds it until Sami Zayn returns. You know you want to see it.

What Will Happen

This one legitimately could go either way. Owens holds a clean victory over John Cena, so logically he should be beating Ryback, but the WWE have put a lot of time and effort into the big guy and a win here could really put him over as Intercontinental Champion, time will tell.

The Wyatt Family vs Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns and a mystery partner

The Feud

This feud has been completely renewed since SummerSlam with the introduction of Braun Strowman. Bray and Roman did a great job in the lead up to SummerSlam, but for the feud to continue it needed a new element and that’s what it got. Irrespective of what people think, Roman Reigns’ work on the microphone has improved out of sight to the point where he can clearly hold his own against the eater of worlds. Ambrose and Reigns have been together in a feud in one way or another since May. It’ll be interesting to see if or when one of them turns on the other.

The Match

It’s hard to know what the match will be like when you don’t know who one of the competitors is going to be! If the mystery man is The Rock or Erick Rowan, the match is probably going to be a bit slower pace wise. If it’s someone like Daniel Bryan or Randy Orton, expect the exact opposite. It will also be interesting to see what kind of offense The Shield boys get in on Braun Strowman, who has been all but unstoppable since arriving. This match is incredibly intriguing.

What Should Happen

Daniel Bryan makes his return and the six-men put on 20 minutes of fury before Braun Strowman locks Reigns in that sleeper hold, Harper and Bryan take each other out and Bray Sister Abigail’s Ambrose for a clean victory, one the Wyatt’s desperately need.

What Will Happen

It really all depends on who their partner is. If it somehow is The Rock, playing up the whole ‘family’ angle that both teams has talked about for months, then don’t expect him to be on the losing team. If it’s Bryan, Rowan, Randy Orton, The Great Khali, Savio Vega, Heath Slater (a man can dream) or anyone else, expect The Wyatt’s to get a win to get their momentum back on track.

Dolph Ziggler vs Rusev

The Feud

Ziggler and Rusev are two of the most talented men on the roster, but even they had no chance here. This whole love… rectangle thing has been messy from the start and it just needs to end here, one way or another.

The Match

Don’t expect this match to get much time. This match, in this slot, should serve as a breather between the six-man tag and the title matches closing the show.

What Should Happen

The outcome to this match needs to be such that it ends the feud. Therefore, Lana returning and re-aligning with Rusev is not the way to go. Have Summer Rae ditch Rusev, causing a distraction and allowing Dolph Ziggler to get the victory with the Zig Zag or have Rusev win clean with Dolph passing out in The Accolade.

What Will Happen

It seems likely that what will end up happening is Rusev getting the win via some shenanigans, with Summer Rae or Lana being involved. The Bulgarian Brute has been on a downward spiral since losing the United States Championship and a win here would get him back on track, but Ziggler winning via a distraction could still occur.

Diva’s Championship Match

Nikki Bella (c) vs Charlotte

The Feud

The Diva’s Revolution angle, while promising so much, has been rather slow to deliver thus far and this is not the fault of the NXT girls. Bringing up three highly talented, champion-calibre women at the same time was always going to lead to someone not getting enough spotlight and someone becoming the focal point. Here, it seems the WWE have decided to push Charlotte ahead of Becky Lynch, with Sasha Banks feuding with Paige. Charlotte, winning the Beat the Clock Challenge, got her title match on Raw, winning by disqualification due to twin-magic shenanigans. While a lot of people hated that finish, it actually did EXACTLY what it needed to do. It put Nikki over massively as a heel and makes everyone want Charlotte to beat her that much more, you know, like how a feud should work.

The Match

The Diva’s need a good match here and Nikki Bella has to be at her absolute best. This is it for Nikki Bella, she has moaned for months now that she works just as hard and is just as good as the NXT girls, now is the time to prove it. This needs to be a good, long match with no interference as a title change by disqualification would be an enormous let down.

What Should Happen

Charlotte, after a good, 15 minute match, locks in the Figure-8 and makes Nikki Bella tap out, becoming the new Divas Champion in a heart-warming moment. Paige’s inevitable heel turn should not happen here, this should be a moment for Charlotte. Though, if WWE wants to creatively involve Sasha Banks and Team BAD here, possibly trying to purposely get Nikki disqualified, or just come out to talk trash with Paige and Becky, that’s absolutely fine!

What Will Happen

What’s a revolution without change? Not a revolution, that’s what. Triple H and Stephanie won’t let the women fade into obscurity and expect Charlotte to win here.

WWE World Heavyweight Championship Match

Seth Rollins (c) vs Sting

The Feud

Honestly, this feud has been nothing special. WWE had the clear route of focusing on the championship itself, focusing on it being the one title that has eluded Sting throughout his career or focusing on how terrible it would be for The Authority to have the franchise man of WCW holding the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Instead with the focus being on whether Rollins can win two matches, the feud has been pretty diluted and hasn’t really delivered as well as it could have.

The Match

Obviously, Seth Rollins will carry the match and expect Sting to just have flurries of offense throughout it. It doesn’t seem like this is going to be the match of the night, but with lots of near falls and counters, this could still be a great main-event that will go down in history as Sting’s first main-event in WWE.

What Should Happen

Any of the below options are acceptable.

Option 1: Seth Rollins retains clean, defeating a legend.

Option 2: The Undertaker returns to confront Sting, Lesnar comes out and attacks Undertaker, setting up their third match at Hell in a Cell, Rollins Pedigrees Sting while he’s distracted and wins.

Option 3: Seth Rollins retains via different interference, Sheamus cashes in and becomes champion.

Option 4: Sting defeats Rollins, (only if Rollins retains the United States Championship) but Sheamus cashes in, pooping on Sting’s party.

Option 5: Seth Rollins retains clean and escapes before Sheamus can cash in, leaving as the champion.

What Will Happen

Sting will not leave Night of Champions as the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. That seems more than unlikely, as good a story as it would be. A part-time babyface as champ doesn’t quite work and unless Sting wins the title and is then sucker-punched by a cashing in Sheamus. Expect Seth Rollins to retain.
