WWE Night of Champions 2015 Results: Rollins Retains, Cena Regains

The WWE Night of Champions 2015 will go down as one of the more underwhelming events of 2015. WWE champion Seth Rollins stole the show as expected on a show marred with decent matches, three title changes, and predictable results.

John Cena defeated Seth Rollins to regain the U.S. title. Cena defeated Rollins after another outstanding match. In hindsight you have to wonder why they did the switch in the first place. Cena pinned Rollins after hitting the Attitude Adjustment. Cena laid Rollins out after the match with an Attitude Adjustment on the floor and rolled him back in the ring prior to Rollins’ match with Sting.

Seth Rollins defeated Sting to retain the WWE world title. This was a much better match than most probably expected from Sting. Sting was the butt of a lot of jokes on Twitter but I think he looked great everything considered. Sting reversed a Pedigree attempt into a Scorpion Death Lock and was subsequently rolled up by Rollins for the three-count and the loss. But the action didn’t stop there!

Sheamus came out after the match to seemingly cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase. Sheamus hit a Brogue Kick and looked like he was on his way to winning until the demon Kane returned! Kane with mask returned to seek revenge on Rollins. Yes, a Rollins vs. Kane title series says nobody! Kane choke slams Rollins and then choke slams Sheamus. Kane ends the chaos by hitting Rollins with a tombstone. The bell never rang for Sheamus so his MITB is still in play.

As an event, the show was a tale of three quarters. The first two hours were decent while the third hour of the show, starting with the six-man tag team match was really good. The event featured a few of title matches, but it was the WWE world and US champion that stole the show…as expected.

Kevin Owens defeated Ryback to win the WWE intercontinental title, making Ring of Honor the most successful developmental league in the business. I love Owens as champion but he is struggling since losing his momentum with the Cena feud. Maybe this sets up an impending Owens vs. Daniel Bryan I-C title feud when Bryan returns? Charlotte also won the WWE Divas title from Nikki Bella, ending Bella’s historic title reign.

Chris Jericho was Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose’s mystery partner. While Jericho is a nice choice on paper, if you really think about it, it makes absolutely zero sense. As someone put it on Twitter, “Do you really counter a monster heavyweight like Strowman with an aged cruiserweight? Plus, what was the connection between the three anyhow? The match was great and looked to be a vehicle for a Jericho heel turn. It looks like they may be heading in a Roman Reigns vs. Chris Jericho direction which isn’t bad when all is said and done.

The WWE announced the main-event for Hell in a Cell. In what was probably the biggest surprise of the night, Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar III will headline the event inside a cell. This is a quick turnaround for a match that was expected to be held off until WrestleMania. That tells me plans have changed and they have something big for Lesnar, likely a match with The Rock or a WWE championship challenge. As for Undertaker, maybe they changed their minds and will give the fans the Stings-Taker match they want. Lesnar will also be the next guest on the Stone Cold Podcast on the WWE Network.
