Hello everyone! I am back with predictions for WWE’s Night of Champions pay-per-view this Sunday! The following are my two cents on what to expect this Sunday. Last month, I was only incorrect on one match so let’s see how I do this time.
Pre-Show Battle Royal to name No. 1 Contender to U.S. Champion Antonio Cesaro
It comes as no surprise that the pre-show involves the United States Championship. Cesaro’s challenger for Night of Champions will be determined by the pre-show battle royal. Although his opponent may be difficult to determine, I do have some predictions as to who the winner (or challenger) will be. The superstars that I believe are most likely to win the battle royal are former U.S. Champion Santino Marella and Zack Ryder. Santino would be the most obvious choice since he is the former champion. In addition, Cesaro has continued to feud with Santino on TV. Zack Ryder has been on TV lately, but mostly against Heath Slater as a result of their twitter feud. Santino is the more likely candidate, but Ryder would be preferable.
Prediction: Santino Marella or Zack Ryder
Although Cesaro’s opponent will be determined during the pre-show battle royal, I think the WWE has already decided who will leave Boston as United States Champion. WWE is continuing to build Cesaro as a young up and coming superstar and I would be surprised to see him lose. If WWE wants to the United States Championship to gain prestige back it starts with a lengthy reign. Regardless of who his opponent will be, Antonio Cesaro will leave Boston the U.S. Champion.
Prediction: Antonio Cesaro
Divas Championship – Layla (C) vs. Kaitlyn
The divas division is rarely highlighted on WWE TV, however I feel as though this feud, which somehow includes Eve, has received more exposure than I would have expected. With Eve and Natalya as opponents, we have seen both Layla and Kaitlyn in action in recent weeks. I fully expect Eve to get involved in this match, as it will help her fake face storyline. Eve is more likely to screw Kaitlyn than Layla since it was Kaitlyn who won the #1 contenders battle royal by last eliminating Eve.
WWE Tag Team Championship – R-Truth & Kofi Kingston (C) vs. Kane & Daniel Bryan
Other than the main event, this is the match I am most looking forward to. Ever since Kane and Daniel Bryan began the anger management segments, I have been tweeting and hoping for them to become tag team champions. I think the WWE sees how popular these two are together and how much people have enjoyed their segments. Will that lead to a tag team championship reign? YES! YES! YES! R-Truth and Kofi Kingston are as stale as old bread. The tag team division still needs help and the natural chemistry of Kane and Daniel Bryan would do wonders. Please, WWE, do the right thing.
Prediction: Kane and Daniel Bryan (NEW TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS)
Intercontinental Championship – The Miz vs. ????
We have two TBD title matches on the card. It makes sense considering both the Miz and Antonio Cesaro have not been involved in any highlighted feud. While Cesaro may face the former champ, the Miz may have to deal with more than just that. On RAW, we saw the Miz get involved in the Rey Mysterio-Cody Rhodes match. The segment ended with Rhodes standing holding the IC title. As a result of what I have seen, I expect to see either a triple threat match between Miz, Rey and Rhodes OR a fatal four way with Sin Cara joining the group. Rey Mysterio had a chance at SummerSlam and with Sin Cara and Cody Rhodes involved in a feud, I would not be surprised to see all four superstars in the match at Night of Champions. I am hoping slash expecting the Miz to turn face in the near future, but I am not sure if it will be at this event. Perhaps this match will lead to a face Miz and Cody Rhodes feud. That will only happen if Rhodes wins. However, maybe I am bias because I am a huge Miz fan, but I don’t see him losing the title yet. His feuds (or lack thereof) have not been highlighted enough and his WWE movie has yet to be released so it is not time yet.
Prediction: The Miz
Randy Orton vs. Dolph Ziggler
I understand why this match is happening, but I don’t think it’s big enough to be the only non-title match at Night of Champions. Both Orton and Ziggler are great workers and just like Ziggler’s last few PPV matches, this one should be great. With Randy Orton leaving soon to film a new WWE movie, Ziggler should win this one. His wins seem to be inconsistent, but he is clearly part of the future of WWE.
Prediction: Dolph Ziggler
World Heavyweight Championship – Sheamus (C) vs. Alberto Del Rio
Should I yawn now or wait until Sunday? I have to admit that WWE has made the feud a little bit more interesting with the banning of the brogue kick. This is a storyline that has happened time and time again so it was not creative by any means. With that said, I still don’t see Alberto Del Rio winning yet again. Hopefully this is the end of the feud. Triple H loves Sheamus and WWE is really pushing him to be the face of the SmackDown brand.
WWE Championship – CM Punk (C) vs. John Cena
In my opinion, this is the most unpredictable match on the card. Since CM Punk’s heel turn, I was almost certain CM Punk would win this one. The only doubt I had about Punk winning was the fact that Night of Champions takes place in Cena’s hometown of Boston. This past RAW, John Cena really impressed me once again. When Cena is up against a legitimate opponent like The Rock or CM Punk, Cena turns up his promos. No wacky jokes or silly impressions when it matters most. This past RAW, in front of Bret Hart and the Montreal crowd, Cena called Punk out for not being in the main event on pay-per-views despite being WWE Champion. Cena turned the crowd against Punk and made this prediction harder than I thought it would be. I also expect Paul Heyman to play a role in this match. He showed up on RAW, but his relationship with Punk needs to be at the center of attention more. With all of that said, I think Punk takes this one in order to keep the feud going a few more months until one meets The Rock at Royal Rumble.
Prediction: CM Punk
