WWE Extreme Rules 2014 Results: Shield Win, Bryan Retains

WWE kicked off the post-WrestleMania season with Extreme Rules. The new generation of the WWE took center stage in a show that will be remembered for a tremendous six-man tag team match pitting the new era vs. a classic faction. Unfortunately it may also be remembered for one of the worst steel cage matches in recent memory.

[adinserter block=”1″]Let’s get it out of the way. The stream on the WWE Network was fairly flawless for me. It lagged for a second once or twice but the difficulties were extremely minimal. Quite frankly it streamed better than NXT did for me last Thursday.

The Shield defeated Evolution in a great match that lived up to expectations. The match opened up hot with a brawl. The Shield cleared the ring. Batista was booed any time he got into the match and it wasn’t the kind of booing you want for a heel. It was more like “boo, get out of the ring.” The action went up and down in stages. Ambrose got the hot tag at one point and just went nuts. Things slowed down quickly thereafter with Evolution working over Ambrose. Reigns eventually got the hot tag and took out all three members of Evolution. Reigns put Batista down with a Superman punch. The Shield triple powerbombed Batista for a two-count. Triple H pulled Reigns out of the ring and the action spilled to the floor. Hunter wound up back in the ring and hit Reigns with a pedigree. Batista covered him for a two-count. The crowd broke out into a “this is awesome” chant. Orton hit the RKO on Reigns. Rollins broke up the pin attempt. Ambrose leaped over two announce tables to take out Orton and Hunter. Orton, Hunter, Ambrose, and Rollins wound up brawling all over the building, through the crowd. Ambrose took a bump down a long flight of stairs. Rollins flew out of the stands onto Hunter and Orton on a concourse. Reigns hit another Superman punch on Batista in the ring. Reigns speared Batista for the three-count and the win.

This match was very good, damned good as a matter of a fact. It reminded me of the old JCP/WCW brawls that went all over the arena in the 80s and early 90s. It certainly wasn’t the best match the Shield has had all year but it was a damned good match. I’d certainly rank the Wyatts vs. Shield higher as well as the series the Shield had last year with Team Hell No, but it was a tremendous nonetheless.

The Shield have done it again. I took issue a few weeks ago with the idea that the Shield were the greatest three-man unit in WWE history. I thought it was too early. After all the Shield have not even been on the main roster for two years. Yet once again the trio have stolen the show and delivered another fantastic match. At this point I can’t think of any team in recent memory (or maybe even ever) in the WWE that have been as consistently great as the Shield.

The crowd was merciless on Batista tonight. There are reports that Batista will be taking a hiatus. He desperately needs it. For whatever reason he isn’t connecting and honestly I can’t even figure it out at this point. The WWE can’t afford to have that kind of heat with the money they are paying Batista. I am not sure when Batista’s hiatus will begin but it can’t come soon enough. Maybe some time away will help give him some steam when he returns? Then again he was away for four years prior to this run so who knows. Batista taking the pin is indicative of his impending departure.

Daniel Bryan retained the WWE world title defeating Kane in an Extreme Rules Match. This match was a fun brawl from start to finish with very little wrestling. Daniel Bryan started off the match hot by charging Kane down the aisle. A lot of back and forth action early in and out of the ring. They wound up brawling to the back and then the parking lot. Bryan fought back with a shovel. Kane backdropped Bryan onto the hood of a car. Kane punched a car window and broke the “glass”. Bryan pulled what looked like a tire iron out of the trunk and KO’d Kane with it. He put Kane on a pallet and drove him back to the ring using a fork lift. Bryan then climbed the forklift and leaped onto Kane off of the top of the forklift as the crowd chanted “Yes!” Kane kicked out. Kane recovered and chokeslammed him for a two-count. Kane eventually introduced a table, gasoline, and a lighter. Kane lit a table on fire. Bryan wound up pushing Kane off of the ropes and putting Kane through the table. Bryan hit the Busaiku knee for the win.

Bray Wyatt defeated John Cena in a Steel Cage Match. I have to say this and I hate to nitpick but they showed this whole video before the match of John Cena saying how worried he was about the fans embracing Bray Wyatt. Then Cena comes out, is booed, and mocks the booing. He even laughed them off during the match. So what was he fighting for if he thinks they are a joke? I think they really needed a buffer here after the Shield vs. Evolution. Something was definitely missing here. The match dragged most of the time. Cena was about to walk out the cage until Rowan closed the door. Cena tried to force it open. Harper ran over to help Rowan keep Cena in the cage. Bray broke it up and they closed the door on Cena’s shoulder. Cena climbed out and wound up being forced back in by Rowan. The crowd was fairly dead by the end of the match. Cena tried climbing out on the other side and was cut off by Harper. Cena pulled Harper into the cage. Rowan once again blocked Cena from climbing down. Cena turned Sister Abigail into the STF. Cena broke it. Rowan tried to pull Bray out of the cage. Cena delivered an A.A. on Bray. Harper broke up the pin in the cage. Cena started to walk out of the cage as all three Wyatts were down when the lights went out. The lights came back on and there was a little boy singing “He’s Got the Whole World” with a distorted voice in front of Cena. Bray wound up hitting Sister Abigail and walked out of the cage to win.

This match was terrible, the finish was ridiculous and the crowd hated it. I wrote a blog a couple of weeks back about the new generation of WWE talent. I wasn’t impressed with Bray Wyatt and I received a lot of feedback on it, most arguing with me. I am sorry but this guy is overrated and this feud is terrible. He’s not in a position to have a stinker. This is also not a storyline that anyone cares about. It was made worse with Cena mocking the booing like it didn’t bother him at all. Plus, why did no other babyface in the locker room come out to assist Cena? Do they not care about the children? I am sorry and I know a lot of you love Bray Wyatt but this match was terrible and the storyline is quickly turning into one of the worst of the current era.

  1. Once again I agree with the Bray Wyatt stuff. I think that he is good but I wonder if he is peaking right now. I think the storyline is weak but the theatrics are really strong. It is also confusing to me. If Cena “wins the feud then Bray’s promos will no longer matter and if Bray wins, who is next? Oh well, I enjoyed the show with minimal network issues. Also, I will take some lag for 9 bucks a month.

  2. I think this was an okay show… They’ve gotta slow down with the Bray stuff! They are going to reach into their trick bag one day to find out they have run out of tricks!
