WWE Best Of The King Of The Ring DVD Review – Downtown With Darsie

WWE Best of the King of the RingAfter finishing work as a soda merchandiser, I was walking around the Walmart I was assigned that day and stopped at the entertainment section and visited the DVD isle. In the “New Release” section, my eyes get locked in on a new WWE 3-disc set on the King of the Ring pay-per-view and King of the Ring tournament. It was $19.98 plus tax, so I thought to myself “Why not buy myself a Christmas gift?”

So I bought the new King of the Ring DVD and put it into my DVD player. The 3-disc set is the “best of” DVD, not a documentary which I expected it to be. But, I wasn’t going to complain about having some great King of the Ring PPV matches on DVD.

Booker T hosts the DVD and talks between most matches as “King Booker” (since he won the tournament once). It was nice to see Booker host a DVD instead of color-commentate. A lot of the history or comments that Booker said I already knew, but it was nice to get a “refresher” course on the build-up on the matches.

There were some tournament finals on the DVD as well as some WWE title matches. On the third disc we get the Street Fight from the King of the Ring 2001 pay-per-view when Kurt Angle had his third match of the night against Shane McMahon.

I came to the conclusion on why the King of the Ring tournaments was successful while watching the DVDs. Most years the King of the Ring tournament winner would go on and become a main event star in the WWE. Bret Hart was a former WWE Champion when he won the tournament (twice). Steve Austin, Triple H, and Brock Lesnar won and went on to win the tournament. Owen Hart never tasted WWE Championship gold, yet if you could have a great match with him you’d be set to be seen as a main eventer in the eyes of the fans. There were some failures as King of the Ring winners, like Billy Gunn and Mable (who became Viscera and Big Daddy V).

So the tournament winners have been hit-and-miss over the years, but the events have been memorable. The 1993 event when he lost the WWE title to Yokozuna (remember the camera explosion into the Hulkster’s face?) was Hulk Hogan’s last WWE PPV until 2001. In 2000 we saw the WWE title loose in a six-man match when the Chairman lost the title for his son-in-law to the People’s Champ. The 2001 King of the Ring saw Kurt Angle wrestle three different matches (semi-finals, finals, and a Street Fight).

But the most talked about moment at any King of the Rings has to be the Hell in a Cell match between Mankind and the Undertaker (which is on the DVD). I watched this match with my mother and she was pretty disgusted with the blood, but more so the thumb tacks. In the end, Foley was chokeslammed into the thumb tacks and then the Tombstoned for the loss. She was most disturbed by the Tombstone, which made me smile. Thank you Undertaker.

In my opinion, I would suggest this DVD set. If you weren’t a fan when the King of the Ring tournament was on pay-per-view, this is a must-have. If you weren’t a fan even back when this was around, another must-have DVD set. I have many of hours of entertainment with this DVD set, even though I’ve seen many of these matches many of times over. Go out and get this DVD set at your local DVD supplier!
