WWE 2015 Slammy Award Predictions

Originally published November 14 – The WWE Slammy Awards are a little over a month away and it’s time to have a look at who should be nominated and winning the main awards. While the debate over the legitimacy of the Slammy Awards and whether WWE simply chooses the results themselves will probably never be resolved, cough, Roman last year, this article will look at each of the main categories and determine who really should be winning each of them.

Superstar of the Year

Nominees: Seth Rollins, John Cena, Roman Reigns, Kevin Owens, Brock Lesnar, Dean Ambrose & Bray Wyatt.

This is the easiest award of the night. The man who should have won the award last year is a lock to win it in 2015 and that, of course, is Seth Rollins. Holder of the Money in the Bank briefcase until April and undisputed WWE World Heavyweight Champion from then until his injury in the lead up to Survivor Series, Rollins is far and away the superstar of the year. It’ll be interesting to see if he actually wins the award however with how hard it is for heels to get votes. You only have to look back to CM Punk in 2012 who was literally the WWE champion for all 365 days and yet did not win the award.

Winner: Seth Rollins

Diva Women’s Wrestler of the Year

Nominees: Nikki Bella, Sasha Banks, Charlotte, Paige, Bayley & Naomi

Despite what certain magazine listings will tell you, this award can only go to one person and that is Sasha Banks. If you look at every single high profile women’s match of 2015, they all have one thing in common and that is Sasha. She dominated as NXT Women’s Champion for the first half 2015, followed her reign up with the best WWE women’s match of all time at Takeover Brooklyn and backed it up with an incredible ironman match at the next event. Her time will come on the main roster and while she hasn’t won the Divas Championship, she is still technically undefeated on Raw so there is no way you can go passed the Boss for this award.

Winner: Sasha Banks

Tag Team of the Year

Nominees: The Prime Time Players, Cesaro & Tyson Kidd, The Dudley Boyz, The Lucha Dragons and The New Day.

Don’t you dare be sour, because this award going to the New Day is an absolute certainty. The Prime Time Players would be a very distant second, but The New Day aren’t just the best tag team in the WWE, they’re the best thing going period. The best is yet to come for these three unicorns who deserve every bit of their success.

Winner: The New Day

NXT Performer of the Year

Nominees: Finn Balor, Bayley, Sasha Banks, Samoa Joe, Kevin Owens & Tyler Breeze

This award is labelled performer and not superstar because it would be unfair to not recognise Sasha Banks and Bayley who would comfortably sit in the top four placings of this award. However, the winner is Finn Balor. The man has carried NXT all year and has become the face of the brand. Balor has had a lot more weight on his shoulders with the injuries to Hideo Itami and Sami Zayn, but he has stepped up massively.

Winner: Finn Balor

Funniest Moment of the Year

Nominees: The New Day, The New Day, The New Day, The New Day, The New Day and Dean Ambrose walking through a blizzard after the Royal Rumble.

The New Day’s promo after SummerSlam and the debut of Xavier Woods’ trombone gets the win here. Just remember where you were when you first heard that trombone.

Winner: The New Day

Breakout Star of the Year

Nominees: Sasha Banks, Kevin Owens, Xavier Woods, Neville & Becky Lynch.

Kevin Owens debuted in December. Since then he has been the NXT Champion, main-eventing three NXT events, beaten John Cena clean, won the Intercontinental Championship and with Seth Rollins’ injury, sees himself as potentially the number one heel on the roster. There is no way anyone else can win this award, despite how impressive the 2015’s of Sasha Banks and Xavier Woods have been.

Winner: Kevin Owens

Match of the Year

Nominees: Sasha Banks versus Bayley (NXT Takeover: Brooklyn), Seth Rollins versus John Cena versus Brock Lesnar (Royal Rumble), Brock Lesnar versus The Undertaker (Hell in a Cell), Kevin Owens versus John Cena (Money in the Bank), Sasha Banks versus Bayley (NXT Takeover: Respect) & Roman Reigns versus Brock Lesnar versus Seth Rollins (Wrestlemania).

The most important award of the night is also, this year, the hardest award to pick a winner from. Going through the candidates, Seth Rollins cashing in at WrestleMania was a shocking moment the likes of which we’ll never see again and the match Lesnar and Reigns put on beforehand was outstanding. Kevin Owens and John Cena’s rematch was an incredible back and forth match and easily the best of their three matches. Brock Lesnar and The Undertaker’s final showdown was a fight that exceeded all expectations. The use of the wooden flooring was ingenious. Sasha Banks and Bayley’s rematch at Takeover Respect, while not as perfect a wrestling performance as Brooklyn told an amazing story with 30 minutes of captivating storytelling capped off with a pulsating finish. This leaves us with two matches to choose from, the Royal Rumble triple threat and the first encounter between Sasha and Bayley. What made the Rumble Triple Threat so great was the fact that all three men could easily walk out with the championship creating a sense of unknown ahead of it and all three guys delivered in what was an incredible spectacle backed up by a red hot crowd. But, the match of the year is Sasha Banks versus Bayley at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn. It is unquestionably the best WWE women’s match of all time and while you could go either way with the two matches, the significance of the Brooklyn match and what it showed the world when it comes to women’s wrestling gets it over the line. Not to mention the fantastic moment at the end with the four horsewomen of NXT celebrating together. It is the deserved match of the year.

Winner: Sasha Banks versus Bayley, NXT Takeover: Brooklyn.
