Ever since the WWE created the new title of Universal Champion, wrestling fans have been speculating whether or not Roman Reigns would ultimately gain the title. The popular superstar has been beset by numerous obstacles that have affected his push from the WWE, but the company may be primed for Roman Reigns to resume his place among wrestling’s elite and become the Universal Champion.
The Rise of Roman Reigns
Joe Anoaʻi, now known to WWE fans as Roman Reigns, has an impeccable wrestling pedigree. His father, Sika Anoaʻi, was a member of the Wild Samoans tag team. Reigns is also a distant cousin of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. In many ways, the wrestling career of Reigns parallels that of Johnson. When Roman Reigns first emerged on the WWE scene, fans gave him a lukewarm reaction. The Rock was treated similarly. Like his cousin, Reigns eventually found his trademark style when he became a member of The Shield with Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins.
While Ambrose was initially the breakout star of The Shield, both Rollins and Reigns soon began to gain popularity as solo performers. It was Reigns, however, that WWE executives chose as the face of their new program to manufacture main event wrestlers to their own specifications. Reigns was thrust almost overnight into main event and PPV appearances. The fans, however, realized what the WWE was doing and embarked upon a vigorous campaign of dislike which included booing Reigns whenever he appeared and the use of disparaging signs. The WWE was so bent on pushing Reigns to the top of the company that they would actually confiscate signs that were unfavorable to Reigns and use piped in cheers whenever he wrestled.
Despite all of the controversy about Reign’s rise, he did manage to have a substantial championship run and several good matches with former ally Seth Rollins, Brock Lesnar, and Bray Wyatt.
Is Roman Reigns Destined to be Universal Champion?
Many fans thought it was a given that Reigns would be pushed to the top again when the WWE debuted its new Universal Championship at the 2016 edition of SummerSlam. Finn Bálor defeated Seth Rollins for the new title but was forced to vacate it the following day due to injury. As several wrestlers made their way to the ring in order to stake their claim to succeed Bálor, out came Reigns. It looked as though the WWE was about to ultimately crown Reigns, but a subsequent 4-way battle saw Kevin Owens handed the title when Triple H returned after a long absence and interfered in the match. From all appearances, Owens looks to be the man of the hour going forward.
Recent developments have Reigns pointed in a different path, although it is unclear where it will lead. On the October 3, 2016 edition of RAW, it was announced that Reigns would be meeting Rusev for the United States Championship in a Hell in the Cell match. The program with Rusev may be the WWE’s way of saying that they have now chosen to proceed with a different set of plans for Roman Reigns. Some betonline reviews at wagering websites have even speculated that Reigns will be compelled to drop the title to Rusev and that Reigns’ strong push is at an end.
The Future for Roman Reigns
Despite all of the controversy surrounding his rise to fame, Roman Reigns continues to retain a large amount of popularity due to his polarizing character. Fans either love him or they love to hate him. Either way, Reigns helps to put fans in the seats.
