Why Bill Goldberg Joining 2017 Royal Rumble is Great for the WWE

The WWE shocked wrestling fans around the world when they had Goldberg quickly defeat Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series. Lesnar has looked like an unbeatable machine during his latest run in the WWE, so it was hard to envision him losing in under two minutes to someone appearing in his first match in over a decade. The sheer shock value of the quick win for Goldberg made it a brilliant decision by the WWE. They continued their great decision making by announcing that Goldberg would be entering the 2017 Royal Rumble match. These are the four biggest reasons why having Goldberg at the Royal Rumble is great for the WWE.

Adds Intrigue to a Special Event

The WWE is trying to establish their four biggest pay-per-view events as must-see attractions for wrestling fans everywhere. They have always been able to build intrigue around WrestleMania, but the other three major events never got the same amount of attention from the WWE staff and wrestling fans. That has all changed this year. The WWE was able to reclaim the prestige of the Survivor Series by returning to the original format and adding a unique main event. After his impressive showing at Survivor Series, Goldberg’s presence at the 2017 Royal Rumble makes the event much more interesting than it was last week.

Increased Ticket Sales

The increased level of intrigue is needed for the 2017 Royal Rumble because the event is being held at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The huge arena can hold more than 60,000 people, so the WWE needed to find a way to sell tickets. While special appearances are always expected at the Royal Rumble, announcing Goldberg’s participation two month early is a great way to get ticket sales up. The WWE likely would have had a hard time filling up the Alamodome without bringing back a few old superstars, but having Goldberg enter the main event completely solves any problems with low ticket sales in San Antonio.

Protects Goldberg from Having Poor Match

Since Goldberg has spent so much time away from wrestling, it is hard to envision him having a great match for more than a few minutes. Putting Goldberg in the Royal Rumble is a great way to ensure that he keeps his dominating persona without having to do much in the ring. If Goldberg is involved in an absolutely terrible match, then it would completely kill the momentum the WWE is creating right now. That is one of the biggest reasons his match with Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series lasted less than two minutes. It is nearly impossible to look too bad in the Royal Rumble match, so the WWE will be able get one more prestigious appearance out of Goldberg at WrestleMania 33 before he leaves the company again.

Creates Marquee Match at WrestleMania 33

Despite the impressive performance at Survivor Series, most online betting sites are not going to have Goldberg as the favorite at the 2017 Royal Rumble. It does not make much sense to have Goldberg contending for the WWE Championship since he is not going to spend that much time with the company, so his elimination from the Royal Rumble match will set up a huge feud that will be settled at WrestleMania 33. The most likely outcome would see Brock Lesnar finding a way to eliminate Goldberg. This will give Goldberg the time he needs to get in great shape before having one final match in the WWE. The additional training time for an aging Goldberg will be exactly what he needs to put on an impressive showing, which is something he was probably unable to do at Survivor Series. Since they will not be able to get away with another quick match, the rematch at WrestleMania 33 will likely be the match everyone was expecting to see at Survivor Series.
