With that being said lets take a look at some of the key matchups in Week 7 of the NFL. The first being the Minnesota Vikings/Pittsburgh Steelers matchup with the Vikings finally getting a chance to show the NFL that are a team that is for real in the NFC. While the Vikings have had some tests they have not been challenged like they will be in Week 7 by the defending World Champion Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Steelers have one of the best Defenses in the league and can easily stop the passing & running game of the Vikings. Pittsburgh is starting to pick their game up now that they are completely healthy and over with their small losing streak from the start of the season. They are still the defending World Champions which in most cases still makes them the team to beat. If Minnesota beats the defending champs then it’s time to really look at this team being lead by a 40 year old quarterback as a dangerous team. This should be an exciting game to watch.
Another game that has huge complications this early in the season is the Bengals/Bears matchup in Week 7. The Bengals are looking to bounce back from their Week 6 loss to the Texans while the Bears are trying to be a competitive team this year. If you’re Lovie Smith you have to be more concerned then usual as this is a game that could essentially begin the talks of putting Smith on the hot seat in Chicago.
You have all the things you wanted with a good defense and the quarterback you’ve been looking for your entire time in Chicago. If you still can’t be successful with the pieces in place that you wanted then why should Chicago retain Smith? In my view this more important for Bears then the Bengals due to the complications it could have for their head coach.
The Bengals are still a good team and should be able to bounce back against the Bears in Week 7. The Bengals are showing that they are too good of a team to not be in playoff contention in a couple of weeks. The Chicago Bears are showing football fans that they are not as good as we thought they were (as Dennis Green once said) and could be looking at darker days following Week 7. That hot seat in Chicago is starting to warm up.
Another game where the hot seat is warming up is the Falcons/Cowboys matchup. I see the Atlanta Falcons taking this victory handy from the Cowboys in Week 7. Tony Romo is not the franchise quarterback for Dallas that we all once thought which should start to get the temperature to rise in his collar. While Romo feels the heat it’s no question that Wade Phillips has been on a hot seat for just about his entire time in Dallas and no doubt the temperature will rise closer to a boiling point in Week 7.
Finally the last game that is a key matchup is the Sunday Night game between the New York Football Giants and the Arizona Cardinals. This is a game that can go both ways. The Arizona Cardinals are still the defending NFC Champions and starting to show why they won that crown last season after starting out slow.
The Giants on the other hand looked like a shell of themselves last week against New Orleans. Should they fall this week against Arizona questions will start to raise if this team can do what they did back in 2007 when they won the Super Bowl trophy. I feel like the Giants aren’t a top tier NFC contender despite starting out 5-1. We tend to forget that most if not all of those victories were against franchises that are Top 10 teams in the NFL.
New Orleans made the Giants look terrible in Week 6 and a team that should not contend in January. The Giants need to defeat Arizona to prove otherwise or the lethal New York sports media will start to really put this team under a microscope this early in the season. This should be a very good week for football.
