Inside The Wheelhouse: NFL Week 8 Thoughts

Randy Moss was waived this weekWeek 8 in the NFL is in the books and it may have been the most noteworthy week of the NFL thus far. From shocking releases from a struggling team, to Brett Favre almost playing the entire game and more, Week 8 most certainly did not disappoint for any Football fan. Amazing that in the Week where the least amount of games there is so much to discuss.

Let’s start with the debacle of a franchise that is the Minnesota Vikings. They had plenty of noteworthy items this week that could dominate this entire blog. But the most shocking news coming from the Vikings this week has nothing to do with Brett Favre and everything to do with Wide Receiver Randy Moss.

The Minnesota Vikings waived Randy Moss after 4 weeks of being back with the team he started his career with and being traded from the New England Patriots. The reason why the Vikings would just up and release Moss is mindboggling as he is one of the best Wide Receivers’ in the NFL. It clearly shows us two things about the Minnesota Vikings as well as Randy Moss, 1.) The Vikings are a debacle of a franchise and 2.) Randy Moss must be a huge cancer in the locker room that the Vikings were done with him (again) after just 4 weeks.

Now the next step is where will Randy Moss go? I think it’s pretty safe to say he won’t fall in the laps of the New York Jets or New England Patriots at the bottom of the waiver order. Early choices for where Moss may land are the San Diego Chargers, Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos and the St. Louis Rams. Wherever Moss lands will definitely have their hands full but will also have a talented and motivated (depending on what team gets him) wide receiver on their roster.

Like we have discussed here every week Brad Childress and Wade Phillips are in the hot seat in Minnesota & Dallas. Well the temperatures on those seats have been cranked up to an all-time high after a horrible Week 8 for both teams. Both that had their fair share of offseason storylines before any games were ever played in Week 8.

For Minnesota you have will he or won’t he play with Brett Favre, in Dallas you have will he or won’t he be fired in regards to Wade Phillips himself. Both of these coaches won’t be back next season and nor do they deserve to be. Both lack leadership and respect from the teams they coach which has caused both the Vikings & Cowboys to have less then stellar seasons.

Normalcy has returned to the NFL in the fact that the New England Patriots currently have the best record in the league right now with a 6-1 record. To me this team has come out of nowhere with their dominance this season as they have been overshadowed by the hype that is the New York Jets and the trade of Randy Moss. Either way Tom Brady has led a team with no real notable receivers sans Wes Welker to the best record in the NFL. Will this last for long as the season continues?

In other notes for Week 8 are the surprise starts for the Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This one time Super Bowl matchup have seen these two franchises never really rise to the promise land since that particular Super Bowl took place. Both teams have served to be the surprise teams in both the AFC and NFC this season, leaving many to wonder if they are both “for real” as we approach the midway point of the 2010-2011 NFL season this week.

The NFL is starting to lift from 3rd gear to 4th gear as the matchups are getting better and the playoff picture is starting to take shape. Contenders and pretenders are falling into place as we approach the midway point of the season. Who will continue to climb, fall, slipped to the bottom or rise to the top for here on out? The heat index on the NFL season is starting to get warmer as playoff pushes are beginning!
