UFC CEO Announces Four Big Fights On Twitter

Dominick Cruz Vs. Urijah FaberJim Irsay isn’t the only CEO making news on Twitter these days. UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta made some interesting fight announcements on Twitter. The UFC head honcho confirmed several upcoming fights, two of which will be world championship fights.

[ad 6]The funny thing is that it appears that Lorenzo was just having a great time answering some fan questions. However, in answering the fan tweets, Lorenzo made a ton of news. Check out his Twitter for full conversations and context.

None of the fights will shock you, but they are four biggies nonetheless. The biggest being the Junior Dos Santos vs. Alistair Overeem for the UFC heavyweight championship. Fertitta officially announced that the fight will go down at UFC 146 on May 26. That is great news considering that this fight was rumored to be held off until July.

Cain Velasquez’s next fight has finally been confirmed. Velasquez will fight Frank Mir in a battle of two former UFC heavyweight champions. Fertitta has not given a date on the fight but the fight is signed, sealed, and soon to be delivered. This also squashes rumors of a Velasquez vs. Big Foot Silva or Fabricio Werdum fight.

Former UFC light heavyweight champions Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin will get the rubber match that only they have been waiting for. No date was announced, but I have heard July. This will also most likely be Ortiz’s retirement fight. It would not shock me to see this one wind up in the main-event spot on a UFC on Fox broadcast.

Finally Urijah Faber vs. Dominick Cruz III has been assigned a date. Faber vs. Cruz III will go down on July 7, 2012 at UFC 148, a year and a few days out from their last fight. The UFC bantamweight championship fight was already announced, but the date is something that most MMA fans have been waiting for. The championship rematch will follow the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter in which both fighters will coach against one another.

The only real surprise here is Velasquez vs. Mir. It is probably the safest fight that the UFC could have booked for Velasquez. I like Mir but his best days are far removed. He barely survived against an aging Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira, so a win over Velasquez would be stunning to me. Velasquez will likely get the Dos Santos-Overeem winner if he can score a victory here.

[adinserter block=”1″]Dos Santos vs. Overeem is the money fight on this list. While I personally am most excited about Faber vs. Cruz III, this is the fight that will bring in the most business. Both fighters are coming off impressive KO/TKO wins. The main-event will follow the UFC 145 show headlined by Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evans for the UFC light heavyweight title, giving the UFC quite possibly its two biggest back to back shows of 2012.
