Turning Tommaso Ciampa Heel Is the Right Move for WWE NXT

It was the shock of last Saturday night and the beginning of what was an unpredictable weekend for WWE.  At the conclusion of NXT Takeover Chicago #DIY’s Tommaso Ciampa would snap on his tag team partner Johnny Gargano, destroying their bond that was the heart and soul of NXT.

The response in Allstate Arena was deafening – the outrage and shock could be felt.  The entire scene was emotional from start to finish as fans and commentators watched in disbelief.  Fans reacted angrily in chants that were reminiscent of the Attitude Era.  For that kind of response, NXT has hit the jackpot.

As Earth shattering as the attack was, bigger things are coming for the former #DIY duo.  The scene on Saturday night creates immediate focus on both men and sets them on a bigger journey for the summer.  These are all good things, and as much as fans hate seeing the team breaking up, perhaps the singles competition in NXT just got hotter with this upcoming feud.

#DIY was indeed that passionate core that NXT is built upon.  They created magic in the ring whether they were against the odds or each other (see Cruiserweight Classic).  Ciampa and Gargano captured the NXT Tag Team Championships at NXT Takeover Toronto in a classic bout that was a Match of the Year candidate.  Fans loved them and believed that they could conquer the tag team division once more.  However, the dreams and hopes were dashed in Chicago thanks to Ciampa.

I, for one will be interesting to see the feud play out for the next couple of months.  What will Ciampa have to say?  How will Gargano respond?  There is unlimited potential for Gargano v. Ciampa – it’s a classic former best friends that are now against one another.  However, they may have been great friends but perhaps they make for better enemies.  Feuds such as Shawn Michaels vs. Diesel and Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn come to mind in that aspect.

If their match from last year’s Cruiserweight Classic is anything to go by, the men are just getting started with this new direction they will go in.  That match was one of the high points of the event – imagine what both Ciampa and Gargano can do now.  Ciampa’s change of heart is indeed the turning point that NXT needs considering the rebuilding process they are still in.

There are more questions than answers right now, but they will come in due time.  More than likely the showdown between Ciampa and Gargano will take place at the next Takeover (Brooklyn perhaps).  Until then it should be a fun ride while it lasts.  If anything else the anticipation that will build over time will make this feud even more successful.

The pressure has mounted more than ever before for both men.  While they have great success as a tag team, but now each man is in for himself.  They were already stars, but perhaps they will become even bigger after this feud runs its course.  As their former slogan says – nobody will do it for them.
