TNA showing signs of WCW

Dixie CarterThe Wrestling Observer, Spike TV is set to spend a total of $4 million dollars for the combined contracts of Hulk Hogan, Eric Bischoff, Rob Van Dam, Jeff Hardy and Ken Anderson for Total Non-Stop Action Wrestling.

This has become a mirror of what AOL/Time Warner and Ted Turner did in 1999-2000 with guaranteed contracts for its top talent in World Championship Wrestling which later resulted in financial ruin and eventually sold to Vince McMahon for an undisclosed amount.

[adinserter block=”2″]In another related report by The Wrestling Observer, Spike TV is under pressure from its top executives to increase its overall ratings which includes TNA. Spike TV is spending millions on former big name WCW/WWE talent and even attempting to persuade Paul Heyman, in what is a desperation move to pop high ratings that both the network and TNA still have yet to see.

If TNA would worry about what TNA and not what World Wrestling Entertainment is doing then maybe things might be different. When TNA first launched, yes they began as a toned down copy version of the WWE attitude era, but still offered unique matches and more in ring action, eventually making themselves look like WCW Nitro 1999-2000, with no signs of giving their weekly Impact TV show an overhaul. According to TNA, their recent marketing survey indicates there is still a fan base for the original Extreme Championship Wrestling product.

[adinserter block=”1″]Now in what looks like another last ditch effort, TNA and Spike is shelling out more money on more former WWE/ECW talent with their August Hard Justice Pay-Per View being re-branded to Hard Core Justice. No matter how much Spike and TNA attempt to spend on talent for recycled storylines, the ratings will continue to stay the same. If TNA wants to seriously see a jump in the ratings, regardless of whether they sign Heyman or not, the company needs to seriously look at re-vamping Impact or re-branding it all together. Spike TV needs to ask, is $4 million dollars in 2010 really worth an average weekly rating of 1.1 or lower?

  1. GET RID OF THE HIGH SALARIES AND OLD FARTS. BRING IN HEYMAN AND LET HIM RUN THE ENTIRE SHOW, STOP THE YAPPING AND WRESTLE!!! BRING BACK ECW VIBE!!!! YOU GIVE HEYMAN SOME MONEY HE'LL KNOW WHAT TO DO, PROBLEM SOLVED! WRESTLERS COME AND GO, HEYMAN KNOWS HOW AND KNOWS WHERE TO FIND THEM AND BRING THEM. I MISS JAPANESE WRESTLERS AND LUCHADORS COMING TO THE U.S. LETTING THEIR PERFORMANCE SPEAK FOR THEM.

  2. Yeah TNA is spiraling down slowly… unfortunately. Their first biggest mistake was signing Hogan, their attempt to attract fans based off someone past his time didn't do any good. Many people know who hulk hogan is but don't watch a show based on him (despite what they did 10 years ago). Hogan spit in the face of TNA fans by removing the six sided ring and stating it was like a play pen. Unfortunately hogan knows a lot about wrestling from 15 years ago… things have changed, the business is different. Also not to mention Cena has taken Hogan's place becoming the new "superhero" of wrestling. Here's what I've come up with on how to get TNA out of the crapper shoot it's going down.

1 – Get rid of Vince Russo, his ass is killing you. Take the recent Samoa Joe event Russo is a tool and an idiot!

2 – Start listening to the wrestlers of today not the ones from 15 years ago like hogan. People like AJ, Joe, Lethal, and Abyss, all know the CURRENT business better than anyone.

3 – Lastly stop giving the title to wrestlers like RVD who are fan favorites and having them hold it for the greater portion of a year's time. Fans get bored fast and seeing RVD or some other face character holding the title all the time is dull and will draw no ratings… EVER.

  3. Hi King. I attempted to email you directly based on the email I received, but received a failure notice. I find your comment to be funny. I am not a WWE mark nor am I a TNA mark.

If you go to my website http://prowrestlingringside.blogspot.com and click on the about us section, you will see a real photo of me with Team 3D from a TNA house show that I went to, which hopefully will prove I am not a WWE mark.

    Thank you for your comments.

    • I think it's funny the same guys accusing Jerome of being a WWE mark are probably TNA marks themselves. Like it's a big offense to be a WWE fan? Now any TNA fan on the other hand should be locked up for insanity.
