It would appear that TNA Wrestling’s frozen checkbook has finally thawed. TNA will be reuniting one of the most famous teams of WWE’s Attitude Era when they bring back Matt Hardy to reform the Hardy Boyz.
[adinserter block=”1″]News broke earlier this week that TNA has re-signed Matt. As you may recall, Matt had one of the most embarrassing runs of his entire career in TNA. Matt came to TNA in the midst of a downward spiral which ended his long WWE career. Battles with wrestling’s infamous demons eventually drove Matt away from TNA. To say that this is redemption for the former WWE tag team champion would be an understatement.
Hardy lasted a total of eight months in TNA back in 2011. Matt’s outside of the ring troubles followed him inside of the ring as he showed up out of shape and just appeared out of sync throughout his entire run. Hardy’s tenure ended with a suspension that turned permanent. The Matt Hardy coming back to TNA in 2014 is hardly the same guy.
Hardy’s life spun out of control following TNA. He was arrested on a DWI charge yet what seemed to alienate his fans more than anything else was a video he posted in which he teased suicide, yet turned out to be some kind of poor joke. Hardy eventually checked himself into rehab for three months before being kicked out. Hardy would later return to complete rehab at the end of the year. Hardy has stayed relatively out of trouble since leaving rehab in December 2011 sans a domestic violence incident with wife Reby Sky earlier this year.
Hardy has been working regularly over the last few years at Ring of Honor. Hardy has gotten himself back into shape and found his working shoes. Hardy has also hit the independents the last couple of years with a notable feud against Luke Hawx. It’s been a long journey but even skeptics have to concede at this point that Matt appears to have gotten his business in order.
Matt’s tenure with Ring of Honor may have precipitated his return. According to recent reports, TNA Wrestling agents have been making calls to ROH guys in hopes of raiding the roster. ROH’s venture to pay-per-view appears to have TNA on the attack. Matt was a polarizing figure to ROH fans, yet I do think it is a huge blow to see one of their most recognizable face to national fans leave the company. I am surprised that ROH wasn’t forced to lock up Matt by the cable companies in exchange for getting the PPV slot.
TNA is already busy promoting a Hardy Boyz reunion. Matt and Jeff will reunite on June 25th at television tapings in New York. I would presume this kills the Willow character and I can’t imagine anyone having a problem with that.
I will be pulling for Matt Hardy. He has obviously worked rigorously in and out of the ring to live a healthy and productive lifestyle. I have been surprised in recent years that the WWE hasn’t brought him back as a surprise Rumble entrant. I hope this is only a step back into the WWE, even if just for a one-night shot as TNA is not the end-goal of someone like Matt Hardy.
