The Undertaker Vs. CM Punk Official For WWE WrestleMania 29

The Undertaker is officially set to go for WrestleMania 29. The WWE legend has been questionable for several months but is now locked in for the April event. CM Punk will get the call as expected in what is expected to be one of the Dead Man’s final Mania matches.

[adinserter block=”1″]We all knew it was coming after The Undertaker returned at a recent WWE house show in Laredo, TX but we didn’t know when. Most expected him to make his return last week and interject himself into the John Cena vs. CM Punk RAW match. Instead it was Old School RAW that brought him back to television.

Punk vs. Undertaker was a match that has been talked about for months. It was a lock that Punk would be Taker’s opponent if he was going to go at WrestleMania. It was just a matter of how the match would come together. Armchair bookers had some crazy ideas while those in the know seemed to indicate something was brewing, but after all was said and done the angle was not much of an angle at all.

Punk and Paul Heyman came out at the start of the Old School RAW broadcast. Punk told the fans that he wasn’t even sure if he was going to wrestle at WrestleMania after getting screwed in recent weeks. Punk then told the fans that in return for getting screwed that he was going to screw the fans and end The Undertaker’s streak at WrestleMania. Cue Sheamus, Randy Orton, and The Big Show who all had the same idea. Vickie Guerrero booked a Fatal Four Way later in the night with the winner getting the shot at the streak.

I thought that there was a slim chance that they’d pull a swerve here since everyone was expecting Punk to win. Nope. Punk pinned Orton after a GTS to win the match. After the match The Undertaker came out and had the WrestleMania stare down with Punk as the announcers really pushed the match. Punk vs. Undertaker is on!

I have to say that of all ways to get to this match that this was probably the weakest and most disappointing storyline that the WWE could have come up with. I can’t believe that they couldn’t have done better when they knew for months that this was probably the direction. My only concession here is that maybe The Undertaker didn’t give them a firm answer until after the Laredo match and this was the best they could do with short notice.

The match should be dramatic as most Undertaker WrestleMania matches are. Punk and Taker are certainly no strangers to each other. They did feud a few years back over the WWE world heavyweight title. The feud and matches were nothing special and it was cut relatively short. I expect much better given the circumstances.

But now you have a situation where the guy is expected to lose four big matches in a row. He is entering the match having lost three big ones. Maybe they should have went with someone else and used 2013 to keep Punk strong for an eventual showdown at WrestleMania 30?

  1. Here's what you do…

Punk should cut a series of promos basically saying that he's going to get the Shield to attack him at Wrestlemania, thus DQing Undertaker (since Punk would be the one being "attacked") and ending the Streak via DQ….at Wrestlemania, Punk and Taker engage in a huge match with the Shield looking on…at some point, Punk signals to them, but Ryback and, let's say, Sheamus interfere and stop them. Taker then pins CM Punk with the Tombstone. Shield can then attack both of them afterwards (or on Raw) causing a Punk face turn.

  2. Unfortunately, I am not knowledgeable in booking to have much of a response. Frankly, I think this simple, yet effective Punk feeling upset and wanting payback to those he deems responsible is a fair enough setup for him wanting to challenge the Dead Man. Besides, he still has four weeks to work his mic magic and promote the match. Either way, it'll be an awesome match as is expected of the two wrestlers involved.
