The Rock To Get WWE Title Shot At The Royal Rumble 2013

The Rock vs. PunkThe WWE has made it official! The Rock’s next big pay per view match has been announced. The bad news is that it won’t be until 2013. The good news is that it will be a WWE championship match at the Royal Rumble.

The Rock returned to WWE television on Monday night at the RAW 1000th episode. The Rock interrupted a segment between Daniel Bryan and WWE champion CM Punk. The Rock and Bryan had some real fun dialogue back and forth but it was Punk and Rock who were the main attractions here.

The Rock announced that he has been officially awarded a WWE championship match at the 2013 Royal Rumble. The Royal Rumble doesn’t take place until January 27, 2013, over six-months away. Once again the WWE are announcing The Rock’s match months in advance which turned out to be a good thing when you look back at the WrestleMania 28 buyrate.

CM Punk and The Rock had some words, with Punk insulting Rock for his limited schedule. Because you know, making millions of dollars a year in Hollywood as opposed to breaking your body and traveling every weekend is a horrible thing right? I never understood this whole “The Rock doesn’t wrestle full-time” criticism by Punk. I know it is storyline to get a feud over but quite honestly, it is pretty dumb. The segment ended with Rock laying out Daniel Bryan.

Who knows who the WWE champion will be at the Royal Rumble? It could be Punk, it could be Cena, it could be anyone by the time we get to January 27. My hunch is that it won’t be John Cena. I can’t see Cena losing twice in a row to The Rock, nor can I see The Rock losing this match after a six-month buildup for the match. I think we wind up with Punk vs. Rock at the Rumble with Rock winning and defending against Cena at WrestleMania. Whether Punk is champion by the end of RAW or not, I think he has the belt around his waist come Rumble time.

I have to say that I am a little surprised. I always expected The Rock to enter and win the Rumble. The WWE should do big business next year with a stacked Rumble and WrestleMania in the first half of 2013. I don’t expect a big title run from The Rock but even a few months could peak some real interest and bring back some fans that haven’t watched in awhile.
