The International Space Station Could Crash If the Sanctions Are Not Lifted, Says Russia

The Russian space agency is claiming that the International Space Station could crash if the sanctions placed on Russia are not lifted soon. The Russian space agencies called out the nations that imposed the sanctions and told them to lift the sanctions.

Here are more details about the issue:

How Do Sanctions Affect the ISS?

Because of the ongoing invasion of Ukraine, Russia has become a target of multiple western nations and many sanctions have been imposed. Dmitry Rogozin, the head of the Russian space agency is warning that the sanctions placed against Russia could lead the International Space Station to crash.

According to Dmitry, the sanctions imposed on Russia can lead to the disruption of operation on the International Space Station. He claimed that the sanctions could lead to the Russian segment of the ISS being severely affected.

Because of that, the segment of the ISS belonging to Russia that helps to correct the orbit of the ISS could be affected which could lead the 500-tonne structure to “fall down into the sea or onto land”.

Dmitry who frequently supports the Russian invasion of Ukraine on social networks said on Telegram: “The Russian segment ensures that the station’s orbit is corrected (on average 11 times a year), including to avoid space debris.” He also published a map showing the predicted locations of the fall of the ISS and said that the chances of it happening on Russian land are unlikely.

Dmitry’s Claims

Dmitry called the sanctions imposed on Russia ‘puny’ and ‘crazy’ and asked it to be lifted as soon as possible. He also added: “But the populations of other countries, especially those led by the ‘dogs of war’, should think about the price of the sanctions against Roscosmos.”

This is not the first time Dmitry has made such claims. Back in February this year when the first sanctions were imposed on Russia, and it was warned that the Russian space program would degrade, Dmitry warned the nations that the ISS could deorbit from its path and crash if Washington does not cooperate with Russia.

Dmitry at that time tweeted: “If you block cooperation with us, who will save the ISS from uncontrolled deorbiting and falling into the United States or Europe? There is also the option of dropping a 500-ton structure to India and China. Do you want to threaten them with such a prospect? The ISS does not fly over Russia, so all the risks are yours. Are you ready for them?”

NASA announced on March 1st that they are currently trying to find a solution to keep the ISS in its orbit without the help of Russia.
