You can run but you can’t hide because at some point you will be forced to watch a chick flick movie. Yet as someone that has been forced to watch a lot of these movies, I am happy to tell you that there are some great chick flicks for guys that even the manliest of men can sit back and enjoy.
Anyone in a relationship is bound to be sucked by the dreaded chick flick. We have all been there and we have all paid the price, but not all chick flicks are created equal. Quite frankly some are not only good, but some are great!
I am here to help you navigate through this painful process with several chick flicks for guys that will ease the pain of giving in to that dreaded compromise. While she’ll think you are compromising on the movie choice, you have actually outsmarted her with a movie you would want to see anyway. It is a win-win for the both of you!
Mean Girls – Here is a movie I never would have watched if it wasn’t for my wife. Yet I will gladly admit that I was hooked the first time I watched it. Mean Girls plays about 50 times a year on TBS and I think we get sucked in to ten of those showings. The girls are hot, the movie is written by Tina Fey who has made you laugh many times on Saturday Night Live, and it is just very funny. But a word of caution, avoid Mean Girls 2 like the plague.
P.S. I Love You – I held out for months on this one just for the title alone. I mean, c’mon really? But I finally gave in and this was just fantastic. Gerard Butler can be a little over the top for me in this one, but Hilary Swank really levels everything out and is just tremendous in her role. Who knows, it may even grab a tear or two before it is over.
Grease – The funny thing about Grease is that I know more guys that are into this movie than women when at the end of the day, it is a musical! This movie has it all from the bravado, the cars, and Olivia Newton John is smoking (literally) in this one. Just be careful not to tap your feet and give away the fact that she is actually the one compromising on this chick flick.
The Breakfast Club – An outright classic right here is The Breakfast Club. This is about as guy-friendly chick flick as you are ever going to find. The funny thing is that I don’t even know if guys realize that this is actually a chick flick when in fact…it is. This is a John Hughes masterpiece featuring all of your favorite Brat Packers from the 1980s.
Titanic – This one really tests the boundaries of the man card but quite honestly, how can I run down a guy-friendly movie list without the Titanic? Hey, if any of your guy friends questions you just tell them you are interested in bio-pics. Not to mention, Kate Winslet’s topless scene kind of levels out any questions of the man card in this blogger’s opinion.
Say Anything – How could I go through a list of great chick flicks and leave John Cusack off of it? I can’t. Cusack has a nice filmography of several eligible candidates for this one but this was my favorite of all. The scene of Lloyd Dobler holding up the boom box has turned into one of the most iconic movie scenes of my generation for a reason. Cameron Crowe directed this one which features a great cast and even better story.
Fever Pitch – Okay listen, I may be the only one in the world that liked this movie but I thought it was great. Any guy with a passion for sports can relate to Ben and his passion for the Red Sox. As a matter of a fact, your significant other will probably have a better understanding the next time you tell her you can’t make that function because the playoffs are on. Trick her into watching this one and your relationship will improve the next time you have one of those “conversations.”
The Wedding Singer – At the risk of alienating most of my male readers, I will admit that I am not a big Adam Sandler fan. But I am a fan of Styx and the 1980s! This was much better than I thought it would be and a chick flick you will be forced to watch at some point. You know the story, guy has crush on girl, girl is with a jerk, etc, etc. We have all been there, it is relatable, the jokes are really funny, and Adam Sandler is arguably at his best.
The Princess Bride – Like P.S. I Love You, I avoided this movie for years on the title alone. Even Andre the Giant couldn’t get me to look past the title. Unfortunately or fortunately my wife loves this movie so after years of avoiding this movie, I gave it and guess what? I loved it! It was very funny, Mandy Patinkin is just hilarious, and it tells a great story. Just think of Shrek (which almost made the list), but a lot funnier and you have The Princess Bride.
