Stone Cold Steve Austin Talks John Cena and The Shield

It is always interesting to hear what some of the biggest WWE superstars of all time think of today’s product, especially when you are talking about Stone Cold Steve Austin. The Texas Rattlesnake is a fan of today’s product and has a lot of respect for the top guy.

Austin has done a lot of media lately promoting Redneck Island and the Steve Austin Podcast and I am not complaining. Austin pulls no punches and has turned into one of the most candid interviews in the business. This is why it is always fun hearing Austin’s opinions on the current WWE scene and its biggest stars.

Austin stopped by AfterBuzz TV to promote Redneck Island yet the conversation drifted into the current WWE product. The hosts asked Austin about The Shield and the former WWE champion sees big things in their future.

They’re gonna break up The Shield one of these days after these guys get a little more seasoned…The guys are still great in the business and they have wonderful potential.

I like that Austin doesn’t give your typical company man response when asked about new talent. Austin has been somewhat critical of Punk and here he likes The Shield but think they need more time in the business. I don’t think anyone could argue with him there.

Austin gave a more detailed response when asked about the WWE’s top star John Cena. In the ring Cena and Austin couldn’t be any more opposite yet outside of the ring they probably have more in common than you think. Austin is a fan of Cena but thinks he needs to take care a little more care of himself.

Here’s the thing about John Cena…that guy’s walking on the edge of a razor blade. Some people love to hate him, some people love to love him. But let me tell you something about John Cena; they all respect him. That guy has done a tremendous job for that company. He’s a guy that always shows up, he’ll work in pain, he always has a smile on his face. He goes to the nth degree to promote that brand. I’ve got nothing but respect for that guy. Really the way the fans take him. Some people say, ‘Would you please stop pushing this guy down our throat?’ But they’re not. He’s the face of the company. What do you do? Make number one the Blistering Heel? I tried that back in the day and I was Stone Cold. I was that grey area between black and white. Cena’s the face of the company, you don’t do that. When you turn down the cameras, the lights…he’s the face of the company. John Cena is a young veteran. He’s been in the ring, he’s told some great stories, he’s had a lot of high profile matches. He’s a young man, but he’s a veteran. You gotta work smarter, not harder. John, take care of your body.

Austin is not the first guy to point out that small criticism of Cena. Cena goes hard in the ring, real hard, and he isn’t getting younger. He’s been pretty lucky to have only sustained a couple of major injuries but that could change if he doesn’t slow down or as Austin says work smarter.

It is also interesting that Austin is against turning Cena heel. A lot of fans on the Internet beat that drum but those in the business don’t think it’s a great idea. Austin is one of them and he would certainly know.

This is a fun interview as Austin talks a lot about Redneck Island as well as the current state of the WWE, watching the current product, being a pro wrestling fan, competition between TNA and WWE, etc.
