Stardust to Leave WWE Galaxy and Other Thoughts

It looks like Stardust will be drifting off into a galaxy far, far away.

The announcement of the character played by Cody Rhodes came on Stardust’s Twitter page Jan. 25.

The second generation wrestler and son of the legendary Dusty Rhodes may be one of the most directionless performers on the current roster. With the influx of stars from NXT and the arrival of AJ Styles, where does a talent like Rhodes fit in WWE’s landscape? Does a rebrand of sorts and a new direction guarantee success? That remains to be seen.

There is plenty to like about Rhodes’ and his success. He is a two-time Intercontinental Champion and a six-time tag team champion (three World Tag Team Championships and three WWE Tag Team Championships). But his defining moment may have been when he won the World Tag Team Titles with his brother Goldust.

Does Rhodes fall back on his former persona, Dashing Cody Rhodes, or does he fall into a new shtick that wins the crowd over? There is too much talent in the 30-year-old for him to not be a success at this level. He has recently feuded with Stephen Amell, Neville and Titus O’Neill.

What does WWE do when it knows fans might not have been all that keen on the ending to the Royal Rumble? It calls on The Rock to make his return home to Miami to jazz up crowd.

The Rock’s emergence on Raw was just what the company needed after it put the WWE World Title on Triple H after the COO of WWE eliminated Roman Reigns on Sunday night. Fans weren’t all too excited in Orlando to see Reigns come out as the first contest in the Rumble match, but weren’t overly happy about the Authority taking home the belt, either.

How this all plays out will certainly make Fastlane more enjoyable.

The Rock proved he could own a crowd, crack a few jokes and make us all pine for the days of when he ruled the roost. After he announced he would be at WrestleMania in April, there has been plenty of talk about what role the former company champion will have in the event. Maybe the segment on Monday night shed some light on it.

The Rock took apart The New Day with help from The Uso’s. Will there be a six-man tag match in the works for the undercard in Dallas? I think it is a strong possibility.

While there are some out there who believe Austin Aries arrival at NXT is just as big a deal as AJ Styles signing with WWE, don’t look for the parent company to make it one of the signature moments of all time.

Aries teased us all a couple of months ago when he was spotted at an NXT taping in Orlando. We all should have seen this coming. His formal arrival was discussed on
Austin Aries, a 15-year veteran of the squared circle who’s competed against the likes of Daniel Bryan, Seth Rollins and Samoa Joe, was introduced by NXT General Manager William Regal as NXT’s newest signee. Aries’ surprising NXT arrival will air on Wednesday, March 2 on WWE Network.

Aries is a solid worked and has an impressive resume. He is a six-time TNA X Division Champion, with his first reign lasting 301 days and remains the longest in the history of the championship. Aries is also a one-time TNA World Heavyweight Champion, and one-time TNA World Tag Team Champion, making him the fifth TNA Triple Crown Champion. He is also known for performing in Ring of Honor (ROH), where he became the first two-time ROH World Champion.

All that said, I would not compare his arrival with Styles or Samoa Joe, for that matter.
