WWE Flashback: The Undertaker retires Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 26

The Undertaker pinned Shawn Michaels after two Tombstone piledrivers at WWE WrestleMania 26. The Streak vs. Career Match finished out one of the best WrestleMania events in years and stole the show for the second year in a row. Sadly, the show finished with the end of the career of Shawn Michaels.

Most speculated going into WrestleMania XXVI that it would end with an Undertaker victory. News about the retirement plans of Shawn Michaels has been buzzing in pro wrestling since the end of WrestleMania 25. Yet, there was some buzz over the weekend that the Heartbreak Kid may actually end the streak and stick around. In the end, the result most expected is the result we got and one has to wonder whether this is truly the end of Shawn Michaels.

I liked Shawn Michaels’ and the Undertaker’s match a lot from WrestleMania 25, but I didn’t love it like some people did. I think Michaels and Undertaker topped themselves this year with a WrestleMania classic. Where it ranks among the WrestleMania classics all comes down to personal taste, but the match definitely deserves high consideration. For me, it is still Steve Austin vs. Bret Hart from WrestleMania X3 but again, that is just one man’s opinion.

[adinserter block=”1″]I can easily see some people picking the Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker WrestleMania 26 match apart. Like last year, there were a lot of false finishes. At one point the Undertaker gave Shawn Michaels a Tombstone piledriver on the floor, while Shawn Michaels struck up the band several time during the match. If you like that kind of drama, you will love this match. Some of the more old-school fans may not enjoy it as much because there wasn’t a whole lot of psychology when it came to several of the false finishes and kick outs.

The finishing sequence came when Shawn Michaels attempted Sweet Chin Music but was caught by the Undertaker and chokeslammed the Heartbreak Kid. The Undertaker then picked up Shawn Michaels, nailed a Tombstone, went for a cover, and Shawn Michaels kicked out. Michaels crawled up a standing Undertaker and then slapped the Dead Man. The Undertaker returned the favor by grabbing Michaels and giving him a jumping Tombstone piledriver (think Owen Hart Stampede days) and finally got the 1-2-3.

All in all it was a very fast paced match that saw the Undertaker dominate the majority of the match. To me, it came off as a match with a guy that just couldn’t hang with the other. The ““WrestleMania Moment,” will likely be a moonsault from the top rope to a prone Undertaker on a table outside of the ring. Michaels couldn’t have timed the move any better.

It is hard to believe that this will be the last we see of Shawn Michaels inside of a wrestling ring. I would not be shocked to see Michaels come back in a few months to Guest Host and start some kind of an angle. Michaels is just too young and too talented to walk away completely. The situation with Ric Flair is an entirely different so I can’t see Michaels coming back to the ring strictly for the money. At the same time, I have been told by several people over the years close to Shawn that he is really hurting and needs a lot of time off and away from the ring. Those close to Shawn have told me that other than a one-night return, they couldn’t envision Shawn Michaels ever coming back on a full or part-time basis.

Shawn Michaels has his critics, but I am not one of them. Over the last three decades, Michaels has probably been my favorite wrestler to watch. I just don’t remember many, if any bad Shawn Michaels’ matches. They may not always be great ones, but I can’t recall any stinkers from Shawn Michaels in the ring. On top of that, there is nobody that comes close to his string of great WrestleMania matches. Taking into account all of the pressures of being Shawn Michaels on WrestleMania and continually having great matches, that alone makes him one of the greatest of all time.

Whether this is truly the end or the beginning of a long layoff, I think we have seen the last of the great Shawn Michaels. Sure, he may be able to come back every once in awhile but it won’t be the same. As exciting as his style of wrestling has always been, it is one that doesn’t lend itself to a long career. Unless he is Superman, it is fair to say that his body has absorbed more punishment over the last 25 years than just about anyone else in pro wrestling.

I know that people like to call Ric Flair the greatest of all-time, but I disagree. I will always say that Shawn Michaels is the greatest of all-time. Michaels not only had more great matches, but probably influenced more top WWE superstars over the last several years than anyone has in decades. It was Michaels that helped break barriers and usher in a different kind of pro wrestling in the main-events. If it were not for guys like Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart, pro wrestling may still be in the muscle monster era robbing us of some of the greatest matches of the last twenty years. Shawn Michaels will definitely be missed, he will never be replaced, and pro wrestling won’t be the same without him.

  1. for the guy who says wrestling is fake you're a liar and you have no idea what you're talking about htey get beat up. the wrestlers suffer more punishment than your so called ufc heroes so shut the hell up jerk!

  2. I think im one of the only people that thinks we probably wont see him in a match again maybe for a while, if at all. I just cant see him getting back in the ring again unless he misses it that much. From everything I have heard, he's set financially and I dont see him coming back for money.

  3. If this truly was his LAST match ever, I believe it should have been against Triple H. The reason Michaels and Flair worked so well is you could see the passion between them. That just wasnt there this year. Michaels and Hunter could have put on the best match in Wrestlemania History and left the crowd Crying, Laughing, and Cheering. But maybe that's why I'm not the Owner of Wwe.

  4. Then you snap back to reality and realize that you knew wrestling was fake.

    And you cry a little.

You make the decision to watch some U.F.C.

You like it because it's real.

And you're a man now Ma' Boy.

  5. WOW.After watching the Michaels and undertaker match i seriously was crying.Michaels was my favorite wrestler in the WWE i was so mad at him when he agreed to the match is was to much of a big risk.it really sucks that he left the WWE for good.Hes probably going to TNA.

  6. NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shawn Michaels shoud of won :(:(:(:(……….He will be remembered in all of our hearts

  7. "Michaels is just too young and too talented to walk away completely."

The man is 44 years old. How many people his age do you know that can take the beatings for 25 years, and still be able to move well enough?

  8. it was the first Wrestlemania i've ordered since… hmmm, a while, i guess since Austin beat Michaels, and that sucked. Yeah, there's a horrible Micheals match in a wrestlemania, also The Rockers vs Fuji's Orient Express, I think it was, wasn't a thriller in six, I think.

But overall i liked it. I worry that younger people would judge Bret Hart from that match with McMahon, it's amazing where he's at since he was in a wheelchair nott too long ago, but he didn't even take a bump. I think the announcing played a factor, I'm sure poeple miss JR a lot… I think of Ventura/McMahon, Ventura/Monsoon, Heenan/Monsoon, and then i think JR/Lawler, those two would have made EVERYTHING a lot better last night, I can't see Bret EVER wreslting again, if you call that wrestling — and he shouldn't, he has nothing to prove. I think it's cool the whole resentment thing is over, in life that's not good for anyone.

I thought it was cool overall, but some matches were rushed a little, I liked CM Punk (i think he's my fav wwe guy right now, his whole aura and skills are great) vs Mysterio, I thought, and was happy and surprised Jericho beat Edge, I like Edge as a heel, Cena makes Batista quit, but that match wasn't that impressive, and i was surprised, i liked the Undertaker – Michaels match, i thought Michaels would win, the ending was GREAT.. and it was really cool seeing Michaels at the end, thanking everyone, getting a little choked up, but the end of that match was awesome… why waste time with Diva match crap, they don't have like, Mean Gene in the dressing room after the match, with Jimmy Hart Heenan saying they got robbed or celebrating after a victory, I miss managers too, ya know? but overall it was cool, better than i expected — i guess for my age and my lack of BEING IN LOVE with the whole thing, it's not what it used to be for me. Watching the old wrestlemanias, i mean, where was Bob Euker trying to find Elizabeth the whole night? ya know, it lacked in that area, i didn't get the sense i watching something real important, i don't think they used any celebrities with anything, and that's fun once a year, ya know?

I don't think you can call any wresler GOAT, or anyone in any sport, because it's different eras, different situations, circumstance, but i just can't see Michael's over Ric Flair, no way… out of curiousity, is Macho Man Savage in the WWE HOF? He defnitely should be… I too can't see Michaels not wreslting again, the only guy i can think of off the top of my head who stopped and never went back when he could have is Ventura. So — good stuff, though.

  9. The Vince/Hart match was terrible. Hart is so bad on the mic that the "twist" of the Hart family actually being on Brett's side fell flat. The match suffered for it. Besides Brett going nuclear with the chair there was nothing to it. Boring stuff. What a wasted opportuntiy.

The Undertaker/Michaels match actually had me jumping up and down. Normally I don't get into a match that much but they did a good job of keeping it a mystery who would actually win. And with the underlying rumors of Michaels actually wanting to retire, there was a lot at stake. Great match. Just look at the faces of everyone in the front row around the ring. They were stressing and hanging on every move. That's what it's all about. This match was done exactly right. Unfortunately it was the only one.

  10. Great match and great finish dis WrestleMania, they couldnt of picked a better person to retire shawn than the undertaker because there the only ones left from the old school still wrestling in the WWE.

  11. Talented, yes? But too young? Shawn Michaels is almost 45, about the age where pretty much everybody else in such a physical profession has already retired. I'd rather he walk away while he is still capable of having a match like this.

  12. So, the great shawn Michaels is done, what a sad night, i was for sure Shawn had it, but i guess it wasn't in the cards. Yes, this years wrestlemania was a bit dull, except for the last match, that was just epic, it topped last years HBk, vs. undertaker by far.

  13. I thought it was a pretty good Wrestlemania. Predictable, but i actually thought HBK was going to win at one point. I liked this years Undertaker-HBK match a lot, maybe just as much last years.

The one thing that i didnt like was Christian not winning MITB

  14. I actually thought this was one of the worst wrestlemanias ive watched in years. everything up to the Cena and Batista match was nothing different from what you see on Raw every night. the Bret vs Vince "match" was just really weird. the crowd was really quiet too, maybe it was different live but on tv it seemed like they were dead silent until Cena came out. Obliviously the highlight of the night was the main event. however i dont think it was as good as last years match, this one still rocked. definitely not worth the 65 bucks though.
