Shawn Michaels Talks Daniel Bryan WrestleMania Rumors

WWE rumors focusing on the return of Mr. WrestleMania Shawn Michaels. Rumors pointed to the WWE booking HBK at WrestleMania against his former student, yet HBK says those plans were more wishful than necessary.

It didn’t take long for fans and wrestling media to make the lengthy jump from Hell in a Cell to WrestleMania when it came to Shawn Michaels. Michaels came back to take part in the angle between the Authority and his former protégé Daniel Bryan. Most expected the angle to culminate in a big Mania showdown. Michaels says that is not the case.

Shawn Michaels was a recent guest on Jim Ross’ Ross Report podcast on Podcastone.com. J.R. asked Michaels how close he was to returning to the ring and according to the Hall of Fame star that was just not going to happen.

“I know that it did look like that,” Michaels said. “I guess I always assumed they have a direction and an idea. And, some of it was just left out there (laughs) and there was never really much resolution. I can say there was going to be even less resolution until – after kicking him, I said, ‘Can I at least go back the next day and let him stretch me?’ I threw it out there, ‘Let me stay here until Monday, let him stretch me, and get that back. And then I’ll go home and you can do whatever you want.’”
“There may be discussions that go on that the Internet guys know about that no one ever mentions to me. I suppose that’s possible, but I never gave anyone the idea I was going to wrestle again.”

It’s interesting because I read many of those reports and not once for a second did I think that was going to happen. What was so interesting was why they did the angle with Michaels teasing a heel turn if he wasn’t coming back? The story made sense but the lack of payoff made the angle nonsensical to me.

Michaels addressed the idea of ever coming back to wrestle at WrestleMania. As expected he has no plans to return to the ring now or ever.

“Every time I go back, people joke about it or I’ll get a person here and there who says, ‘If we did this and this, would you do it?’ But, they’re never the decision-makers, I should say. But, no, there was never anything.”

Michaels further stated, “The only person who has say-so on whether I wrestle again is me. I guess I can play with it every year and pretend to start the rumor, but I’ve just never done that. Even though I have absolutely never once in the last four years, going on five now, ever given anyone the impression that I was entertaining the idea.”

So there you have it. The book is closed and while that is disappointing, I think most will agree that things worked out pretty well without him at Mania 30.
