Halloween. For fantasy geeks like me, this holiday is the one day where we can unleash our inner dork and people will not bat an eye at our getups. However, there is a dilemma. Which character are we going to dress up as?
Most of us “geek out” over several different “fandoms”; for example, one may love both Rowling’s Harry Potter and Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. Do you don the guise of the Boy-Who-Lived? Or The Ring-Bearer, Frodo of the Shire? Do you frantically befriend a seamstress so she can make a Jedi Knight costume for you, or are you more of a Trekkie? Decisions, decisions. But they are tough decisions for a geek to make. After all, you don’t want to betray your favorite book, movie, or TV show.
[adinserter block=”1″]But fear not! I have compiled a list of what, in my own humble personal opinion, the top ten most popular fantasy geek’s costumes for men and women should be for this Halloween. It is my hope that this will help my fellow geeks who are stuck in a rut make that all-important decision.
The Top Ten Sci-Fi/Fantasy Costumes For Men
• 10 Harry Potter
• 9 King Arthur
• 8 Superman
• 7 Darth Vader
• 6 Spock
• 4 Rorschach
• 3 Aragorn
• 2 Batman
• 1 The Joker

The Top Ten Fantasy Costumes For Women
• 10 Queen Guinevere
• 9 Morgan Le Fay
• 8 Hermione Granger
• 6 Elizabeth Swann
• 5 Catwoman
• 4 Arwen Evenstar
• 3 Eowyn of Rohan
• 2 Silk Spectre II
• 1 Harley Quinn
My reasoning for Batman and Joker being in the top position is that while The Dark Knight being released a year ago, they are still extremely popular figures. You have only to take a gander at The Joker Blogs on YouTube to see that Batman and Joker fans are still alive and well. Besides, I think it would be a great idea to have two friends dress up as the archenemies and create a skit around their costumes.
Considering how wildly popular The Dark Knight and Watchmen movies are, I figured it was only fair to have Harley and Silk Spectre II in first and second place. If you have two male friends, you might want to go as a trio: Batman, The Joker, and Harley Quinn or Dr. Manhattan, Nite Owl II, and Silk Spectre II.
[adinserter block=”2″]All of the female characters on the list are strong women; Eowyn chose to defend her family and her people by riding out in disguise at the battle of the Pelennor Fields and defeated the Witch-King of Angmar to boot. Bellatrix Lestrange is Lord Voldemort’s right-hand woman and has a knack for dueling. Whether princess or shieldmaiden, witch or comic book villain, we women have as many choices as men do in terms of interesting characters.
However, as a friend pointed out, of course you are not limited to the most popular characters in fantasy/sci-fi “fandom”. We geeks are creative and imaginative people; so feel free to use this list as a jumping-off point and explore the lesser-known characters of the sci-fi/fantasy world.
Also, in the end, have fun with your costumes and if torn between two characters, remember this: there’s always next year!
