Rose Will Get MVP, But One Player Has Been More Valuable

Dwight HowardAs the NBA regular season winds down, the time has come for writers around the league to cast their vote as to who deserves the league’s MVP award. While it seems as though Chicago Bulls’ guard Derrick Rose has become the runaway online sports betting favorite to win the award, there may be another player that deserves it more.

Not since the days of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen have the Bulls look so strong, and for striking memories of those championship teams from the 90’s, this Chicago team should be held in high regard. The Bulls have the second-best winning percentage in the entire association, and the biggest reason for it is the team’s best player in Rose.

The 23-year old has averaged 25.1 points per game, 7.8 assists, and 4.1 rebounds, which rank among the best numbers in the NBA. Those numbers alone would put Rose in contention to become the youngest player ever to win the award. Leading the Bulls to the best record in the Eastern conference after finishing in the bottom half of the playoff picture a year ago has fans pointing out Rose as the MVP.

Those same pay per head writers will attribute the improvement of players such as center Joakim Noah and forward Luol Deng to the play of Chicago’s point guard, but the truth is that the improvement attributes are reciprocal. The development of Noah and Deng have helped Rose’s numbers as much as they have helped him, and let’s not forget the arrival of Carlos Boozer in a Bulls’ uniform. Boozer has helped the other big men on the team with his physical presence, leading the team in rebounds and ranking second only to Rose in points per game. So while Rose has gotten all of the credit for the team’s rise to the top of the Eastern conference, more consideration should be given to both Boozer, Noah, and Deng in regards to the team’s improvement.

The same cannot be said about the Orlando Magic, a team that has hovered around the top of the Eastern conference over the past three years. Orlando tried to change things up with a massive blockbuster deal that was made at the midway mark of the sports betting bonus season, but the concept was to build around a team where the superstar’s presence was greater than any other franchise. Center Dwight Howard has been dominant for a long time, and has averaged 23.1 points with 14.1 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game. There may not be a player with as much of an impact at both ends of the floor, and as was evidenced without him in the lineup earlier in the year, Orlando falls apart without Superman in the middle.

The Bulls will finish with the best record in the east, and their best player will be recognized with a NBA MVP award in Rose. Orlando’s center has been more valuable to his team than any other player, and that is why although he won’t win Howard deserves the true MVP award.
