Within a minute, we saw Messi miss a penalty and Ronaldo score a banger
It was a long wait for football fans all over the world, but my oh my was the return sensational! The Champions League fixtures started this week with PSG and Real Madrid kicking off the Round of 16, and with the return of the Champions League, it was probably time for Mr. Champions League to show up too.
Manchester United is finally back in the Champions League and will face Atletico Madrid next week. Cristiano and United both were in a bad run of form and the team desperately needed a win. Ronaldo showed up big time with a rocket to open up the scoring for United.
Messi on the other hand was on the microscope for missing a spot-kick against Paris Saint Germain.
Cristiano Ronaldo ends the worst goal drought of his career
When it comes to Cristiano Ronaldo there is a certain level of standard that he has set for himself and considering his performances in the past few games he was the one itching for a breakthrough. It had been 587 minutes since Ronaldo had failed to find the net.
Before this, his last goal drought was for 546-minute in 2010. The pressure was on the Portuguese as he missed some easy chances in the past few games, but yet again he delivered for Manchester United.
The goal was sensational but apart from the nature of the goal, it was the timing that made headlines around the world. At the same time, Real Madrid was up against PSG, and PSG was awarded a spot-kick.
Lionel Messi went up to take the penalty but the Argentine International saw his attempt saved by Courtois who had a sensational game. Just a minute after that Ronaldo went to score a peach of a goal.
Ronaldo had a great game overall and set up good chances for Bruno and well as Jadon Sancho. It was very important from United’s perspective to get him fired as he is the one who has to lead the team from the front.
Now the microscope will be on Lionel Messi who has had a slow start to his career for PSG. It was Kylian Mbappe who ended up saving the day for Paris in extra time.
Ballon d’Or changing its Valentine?
As we all know every great story comes to an end. Could it finally be time for the prized pupils of the Ballon dOr to finally give up their seats in the race for the best? We all know that no matter how good you are no one can beat old age and with time the performances of even the best are affected.
It hasn’t been the best of seasons for both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. With newcomers like Mbappe and Haaland, this season will be a true test for both the veterans.
Can they rise up once again to prove that they still are the best in the game or will it be the younger generation that will take over?
