Ring of Honor on HDNet Recap – Feb. 22

Ring of Honor on HDNetWelcome loyal readers to this week’s episode of ROH on HDNet.

This week’s program begins with some highlights from the 8th Anniversary pay-per-view main event where Tyler Black defeated Austin Aries for the ROH World championship.

Rhett Titus vs. El Generico

This match represents one of my favorite aspects of ROH. The weights of both wrestlers are 203 and 199 lbs. respectively. I love that ROH gives smaller wrestlers a chance to perform without pigeonholing them into a “cruiserweight” or “light heavyweight” division. When everyone is basically the same size and you don’t have 300 + pound juiced up monsters, you don’t notice that the wrestlers are smaller. The ROH crowd starts off by chanting, “You have herpes!” to Rhett Titus. Nice to see the spirit of the old ECW crowd is still alive and well in ROH. Generico is playing up the whole “distraction” angle from his feud with former partner Kevin Steen. Titus uses this to his advantage and gets the inside cradle for the surprise win over “the Generic Luchador”.

Backstage with Colt Cabana

Kyle Durden interviews Colt Cabana. He talks about his concern for the mindset of El Generico. But wait, this just in, there is breaking news out in the parking lot.

Outside with the Necro Butcher

Necro is in the parking lot and he wants Erick Stevens and he wants him now! Wait here for a minute, I need to go move my car. Or call my insurance company.

Colt Cabana vs. Bobby Shields

Bobby Shields is currently in the ring so you know how this one is going to end up. Colt Cabana has some of the best mic skills in the business today. I am not a huge fan of his in ring work but I do love watching him cut a promo. Colt really plays up to the crowd and basically humiliates and toys with Shields before ending it with a quick submission. After the match, Steve Corino comes out and warns Colt about getting involved with El Generico. Can you say “future tag team grudge match?”

Next week on ROH…

A promo is shown for next week’s main event, The American Wolves vs. The Dark City Fight Club. The tag team division in ROH is ridiculously deep and these are two of the best. Next week should be a war!
Meanwhile, back in the parking lot…

The Necro Butcher is slamming Ernesto Osiris’s head into the side of a truck. Erick Stevens shows up and they brawl around the parking lot. Eventually they wind up inside the arena with Necro punching out the time keeper and Stevens power slamming Necro onto a stack of metal chairs. Just another quiet night in South Philly.

Backstage with Jim Cornette

The commissioner starts off with some comments about the Necro Butcher. And I quote, “He’s as crazy as a rainbow trout in a car wash”. Ummm, I need a minute to think about that one. One thing I did understand was his announcement of a tag match he is making for next week. Former ROH champ Austin Aries and Kenny King vs. new ROH champ Tyler Black and Roderick Strong.

The Briscoe Brothers vs. The Young Bucks

This is the main event. The tag titles are on the line. The Young Bucks earned their title shot with a great win against the American Wolves in a classic match two weeks ago. This should be another great match. The Bucks come out and the crowd pops for them big time. After this match was taped, The Young Bucks left ROH for TNA and now wrestle as “Generation Me”. I agree that this is a good career move for them from an exposure standpoint. However, I would have liked to see them in ROH a little longer. The crowd really took to them and the quality of matches they could have had in the ROH tag division would have been awesome. The early part of the match has both teams feeling each other out. Eventually both teams start hitting some big spots. At one point all four men were laying in the ring after executing super kicks on each other. Another highlight spot was a double team neck breaker on Matt Jackson from the top rope. The Briscoe’s begin to overpower the Bucks and finally execute their finisher, The Doomsday Device, for the win. Actually that used to be The Road Warriors finisher, but I digress. This was a very good match, but not the great match of two weeks ago. I think that speaks more to the abilities of the American Wolves more than anything. After the match was over, the crowd chants “Thank you Young Bucks” and the Briscoe’s show their respect by raising the Bucks arms.

This was a solid episode of ROH. The groundwork was laid for future matches and angles. And the Young Bucks wrestled their last match for ROH. And don’t forget, only two weeks to go until the TV title tournament begins. “He’s as crazy as a rainbow trout in a car wash”… nope I still don’t get it.

Vince DeHoratus lives in suburban Philadelphia with his wife and two kids. He has been a life long wrestling fan and he has passed that love onto his son. Though not quite yet “middle aged and crazy”, he is fast approaching it.
