Rob Van Dam Wins the TNA World Title

Rob Van DamFormer ECW and WWE champion Rob Van Dam added a new championship to his trophy case. Rob Van Dam is the new TNA world champion, beating A.J. Styles on TNA Impact. The unscheduled match saw the finale of the best TNA Impact show since the move to Mondays. Could RVD be the spark that TNA Wrestling has been looking for?

As much as I have criticized TNA Wrestling since the start of the Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff regime, they got it right on Monday night. TNA Impact started with a hot segment which announced that the winner of Rob Van Dam vs. Jeff Hardy would meet A.J. Styles for the TNA world title live on TNA Impact. This was one of, if not the best opener that TNA Impact has produced on Monday nights.

Rob Van Dam later pinned Jeff Hardy in their singles match. Hardcore fans expecting a dream match would probably be disappointed by these two. The match was really good, but not what you would expect when you see RVD vs. Jeff Hardy on paper. My hunch is that these two saved their best stuff for a future pay-per-view match. Rob Van Dam won the match with his patented Five Star Frogsplash.

Rob Van Dam later pinned A.J. Styles in the main-event to capture the TNA world championship. Ric Flair was banned from ringside. RVD used another Five Star Frogsplash for the win in this match. TNA had a cool scene here where they had confetti fall from the ceiling and made Rob Van Dam’s TNA title win a very big deal. Following the match, a ton of TNA wrestlers and TNA personalities came down to the ring to celebrate the title win with Rob Van Dam. I thought this was a little corny and forced, but it really hit the point home as to what a big deal this was.

I have to give TNA Wrestling some credit here. Up until this point the Hogan-Bischoff era has been abysmal. I still can’t make heads or tails of half of the angles going on in TNA. But this was a great rebound from a weak finish to TNA Lockdown last night. I think Rob Van Dam has a big enough following where one man can make a difference and his TNA title reign could attract some new fans. The big question is whether those same fans will stick around through the rest of the mess to watch their favorite wrestler tear it up on TNA Impact. Todd Frizzell will have a full recap of the entire show later this week.

Even Jim Cornette had to be smiling at the end of this show.
