Former ECW and WWE champion Rob Van Dam added a new championship to his trophy case. Rob Van Dam is the new TNA world champion, beating A.J. Styles on TNA Impact. The unscheduled match saw the finale of the best TNA Impact show since the move to Mondays. Could RVD be the spark that TNA Wrestling has been looking for?
As much as I have criticized TNA Wrestling since the start of the Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff regime, they got it right on Monday night. TNA Impact started with a hot segment which announced that the winner of Rob Van Dam vs. Jeff Hardy would meet A.J. Styles for the TNA world title live on TNA Impact. This was one of, if not the best opener that TNA Impact has produced on Monday nights.
Rob Van Dam later pinned A.J. Styles in the main-event to capture the TNA world championship. Ric Flair was banned from ringside. RVD used another Five Star Frogsplash for the win in this match. TNA had a cool scene here where they had confetti fall from the ceiling and made Rob Van Dam’s TNA title win a very big deal. Following the match, a ton of TNA wrestlers and TNA personalities came down to the ring to celebrate the title win with Rob Van Dam. I thought this was a little corny and forced, but it really hit the point home as to what a big deal this was.
Even Jim Cornette had to be smiling at the end of this show.
