The show opens this week with a promo from dem boys from Sandy Fork, DE, the Briscoe brothers. Tonight the former 6 time tag champs will take on Caprice Coleman and Cedric Alexander. They vow to take care of Coleman/Alexander much faster than the world’s greatest tag team a few weeks back. Let’s join Kevin Kelly and Nigel McGuiness at ringside for the call.
The Briscoe Bros VS Caprice Coleman & Cedric Alexander
We first got a glimpse of Coleman/Alexander when they entered the proving ground against the tag champs a few weeks back and actually lasted 13 minutes with the champs. They were impressive then and we already back to their impressive ways in the early goings of this match stringing together some nice offense highlighted by some unique double team maneuvers and Alexander executed a nice springboard cross body onto the briscoes outside the ring.
“Unbreakable” Michael Elgin VS. Sean Casey & Raphael Constantine
The next match was interesting as Truth Martini actually requested that ROH give Michael Elgin a handicap match. Elgin being the resident powerhouse in ROH would have no problem dealing with these two and as expected. Sean Casey is actually a veteran in the sport and had an age and experience advantage over Elgin but that would prove to be the only advantage and of course neither of these two would help in the strength department as Elgin just tossed these two around the ring like rag dolls!!!!! Constantine is billed as being from my home town of Richmond, VA but unfortunately I don’t know much about him.
Constantine did take one of the sickest bumps I’ve seen in a while when Elgin tossed him up and he came right down on his neck and shoulder. Everyone including Kelly and McGuiness held their collective breath to see if he would recover. The mercy killing was over and the end came when Elgin grabbed both men and finished them off with a double Alabama Slam. I don’t think that Elgin has an opponent yet for Final Battle so I’m curious to see who ROH pairs him against.
Your Winner – “Unbreakable” Michael Elgin
Jim Cornette responds to Kevin Steen in an interesting way as he says that he has come up with a way to make everyone happy and to deal with Kevin Steen and that he’s inviting all parties including Steen, his attorney, Steve Corino and even Jimmy Jacobs to the ring next week on ROH TV. I am very much looking forward to this and am curious to see what Cornette has in store.
As a huge MMA mark as well as pro wrestling mark I have been anticipating this weeks inside ROH. This week we get to take a road trip to Cold Water Michigan and visit the training facility of legendary amateur wrestler and UFC hall of famer Dan “The Beast” Severn. As you know Edwards is being trained by Severn. We get a glimpse at the training and get a few sound bites from Edwards and Severn as much is still made of the fact that Davey Richards says that he had the idea to train with Severn first and now Edwards is doing so in anticipation of their rubber match for the ROH World Title at Final Battle. This segment was well done and helped to show some similarities between pro wrestling and mixed martial arts.
Also this week we visited Roderick Strong doing his own training in a bar of all places!!!! Strong cut a promo with a beer in his hand surrounded by some ladies and pushed his Roderick Strong Invitational Challenge for Final Battle. This segment made me think of the 80’s when guys like the four horsemen would spend all night after a show drinking in the hotel lobby of the town they were in only to go wrestle once if not twice the next day. Strong plays his current heel character really well.
World TV Title
Jay Lethal VS “The Generic Luchador” El Generico
Time for the main event which is a rematch for the world TV title and before the introductions Mike Bennett and his trainer Bob Evans make their way down to the ring complete with nachos and pretzels and take a seat right at ringside. Lethal and Generico exchanged move after move in the early stages of the match but it seemed like throughout that Generico was a little quicker and about half a step ahead of Lethal. They would trade some sick chops in the corner and at one time Generico hit a sick Michinoku Driver for a near fall.
At this point a timer appears to tell us that we’ve reached the 3 minute mark and up until this point surprisingly enough Bennett and Evans have not gotten involved. As expected I spoke too soon and we now have Evans actually putting the tv title around the waist of “The Prodigy”. One stiff sequence had Generico send Lethal into the corner and followed up by his trademark Yakuza kick and Lethal countered that with a sick superkick!!!! Near fall after near fall by both men has brought us to the 1 minute mark and now Lethal hits the elbow off the top rope and sure enough time has expired and we indeed have another time limit draw!!!! At this point Lethal has caught sight of Bennett with the title around his waist and the action has broken down and they have gotten into it.
TIME LIMIT DRAW
I am really looking forward to next week and the match up between arguably the two most exciting tag teams in wrestling, The Young Bucks and Future Shock. A match between these two teams will show you what tag team wrestling is all about, they are the future of tag team wrestling and it’s worth admission alone but of course if you’re not at the show do yourself a favor and find ROH in your market and watch it for free!!! That match plus the in ring confrontation between Jim Cornette and Kevin Steen trust me I don’t think you’ll be disappointed!!!
