Ring of Honor on HDNet Recap – Feb. 15

Ring of Honor on HDNetWelcome loyal readers to this week’s episode of ROH on HDNet.

This week’s program begins with a recap of the feud between Necro Butcher and “The Embassy”. Several weeks ago the Necro Butcher was attacked by Erick Stevens, the newest member of “The Embassy”. Both men shoot on each other in preparation for this week’s match. Erick Stevens is one tough customer. And if you saw his performance in “The Wrestler”, you know what the Necro Butcher is capable of.

The winner…And New ROH World Champion!

Commentators Mike Hogewood and Dave Prazak come on screen and announce that at the 8th Anniversary pay-per-view Tyler Black has defeated Austin Aries for the ROH World championship. Many people have said that Black will be the next big star to emerge from ROH. Well now he is at the top of the mountain. Obviously, the brain trust at ROH is banking on Black being the man, they’ve given him the ball and it’s up to him to run with it (I think I’m all out of clichés now). It will be very interesting to see how he handles his new found fame in the upcoming weeks.

Erick Stevens & Joey Ryan vs. Necro Butcher & Eddie Kingston

To say that this will not be a very artful match would be a huge understatement. Three brawlers and everyone’s favorite porn star do not a technical match make. Need proof, about 2 minutes into it, Necro has plastic bag around the head of Joey Ryan. ‘Nuff said. The ref has a hard time keeping this one under control. The match ends when Stevens and Ryan get themselves counted out on purpose.

Backstage with Kevin Steen & Steve Corino

Kyle Durden interviews Kevin Steen. He talks about his new attitude and the influence of Corino. Steen has a match later tonight against the unpredictable Delirious.

“SkullKrusher” Rasche Brown vs. Christian Marino

This match has a 15 minute time limit. It might as well have a 15 second time limit. This one gives squash matches a bad name. Brown ends it quick with his finisher, the Burning Hammer (a torture rack into a slam). As Mike Hogewood said, “Slap the porpoise! That was quick”. Ya think?

Last week on ROH…

Next we see a highlight package of last week’s main event between The Young Bucks and The American Wolves. If you read my column last week you know that this was a stellar match. As a result of The Bucks winning, they will get a ROH World Tag Team Championship match against The Briscoe’s next week. I smell another great main event.

Backstage with “The Kings of Wrestling”

The recently reformed “Kings of Wrestling” make their intentions for the tag titles known. The Kings, Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli, are former tag champs and I think it’s just a matter of time until they are wearing the gold again.

Backstage with Jim Cornette

The commissioner has some breaking news for the ROH fans. ROH will be in Phoenix the same weekend as WrestleMania. At a boy Jim, give those WWE fans some real entertainment to watch. He also announced the upcoming ROH TV Title tournament. I am really psyched for this. I think every company needs two singles titles and this will finally let some of the second tier wrestlers shine. Plus this opens up countless new angles and storylines. Way to go commish.

Up In Smoke vs. Sonjay Dutt & Andy Ridge

Former Pro Wrestling Radio (cheap plug) guest, Sonjay Dutt, gets on the microphone and starts talking trash. The ROH audience response of “Shut The @$%! Up” says it all. Up In Smoke consists of Cheech and Cloudy. If you guessed that they are a joke team, you would be right. Well I saw something tonight I never thought I’d see, they actually won a match. Nice work Sonjay, looks like the old career is right on track.

Kevin Steen vs. Delirious

This is the main event. This is a Pick 6 Contenders Series match. The Pick 6 series ranks the top 6 wrestlers in ROH for a shot at the title. If “styles make matches”, then I’m not so sure about this one. The early part of the match consists of a lot of stalling and taunting by Steen. He is really playing the part of the “heel” to the hilt. Eventually the actually wrestle, and Steen starts to overpower Delirious. The pacing is very uneven without many high impact moves. Delirious makes a late push with some high flying offense. However, Steen catches Delirious in the Cross face and makes him tap out for the win. Steen is one of the most versatile wrestlers out there today. He can end a match with the Package Piledriver, the Sharpshooter, or now the Cross face. That’s why he’s called “Mr. Wrestling”. Now with Tyler Black as ROH champ I think Steen will be figuring into the title picture. Stay tuned.

This was a fairly average episode of ROH. For me the big news was the announcement of the upcoming TV Title tournament. And I am really looking forward to next week’s main event with The Young Bucks vs. The Briscoe’s for the ROH Tag Team Titles.
