Welcome back loyal readers to this week’s episode of ROH on HDNet. The program was pre-empted last week so just like the wrestlers, I am rested and ready to go. Let’s get right to the action.
ROH Elite Eight
This week’s program starts with a video package recapping the recent events surrounding the ROH World Title. Mainly the blossoming feud between Tyler Black and Roderick Strong for the belt. And wouldn’t you know it, during one of the crowd shots, “you know who”is shown again briefly. That’s eight weeks and counting, not counting last week when there was no show. Wait, does that break my streak? I may need a ruling on this.
El Generico vs. Ricky Reyes
This is a nice little match up of former tag team champions. Boy the fans really hate Reyes. Every time he mounts some offense the crowd chants “You Still Suck”. Reyes plays to the crowd well and seems to revel in the role of the heel. Generico looks very focused in this match. He appears to finally be over the betrayal by Kevin Steen. Reyes puts him over by taking some nice bumps. Generico lands the brain buster for the win.
El Generico / Kevin Steen Retrospective
Next we see a recap of the Steen and Generico breakup, as well as how Steve Corino and Colt Cabana came to be involved.
Steve Corino Interview
Steve Corino vs. Jerry Lynn
Has Corino been reading my articles? I have been very critical of, among other things, his grandma bloomer style tights. This week he has full length “Mr. Wrestling 3″tights on. Much better look Steve, although he has them pulled up almost to his armpits to hide his gut. The fans start off with a nice “E-C-dub”chant for both men. And if you don’t know why, then I really am getting too old. Lynn controls most of the action in the match. The only offense Corino can generate is the occasional cheap shot. Maybe it’s time to think about hanging the boots up when you’re in the ring with a 46 year old man, who is nearly ten years older then you, and you’re the second most athletic person in the match. The bout turns into a No Contest when Colt Cabana, Kevin Steen, Kenny King, and El Generico (in that order) all run out to the ring to get involved.
Death Before Dishonor VIII
Next we see another video package, this one showing a look at the careers of Tyler Black and Davey Richards. They will be meeting up at the next pay-per-view for the ROH World Title. Very well done segment, especially the part highlighting Davey’s rough childhood. By the way, is it just me or have there been a lot of video packages the last few weeks.
Austin Aries vs. Tyler Black
Then he takes over and methodically breaks down his opponent, just like Ric Flair in his prime. He even locks in a figure four for good measure. Black eventually reverses it and then goes on the offensive, completely no selling that his knee is supposed to be injured from all the abuse Aries has inflicted. Shame on you Tyler, that’s poor in-ring story telling. Eric Gargiulo would not approve. If John Cena can’t get away with it what makes you think you can. Just to add a little more “Flair”to the match, Aries executes the “running flip into the turnbuckle-run along the apron-climb the opposite turnbuckle-get caught”thingy. Black goes for a top rope move and misses, which of course re-injures his knee. Aries goes back to the figure four well once too often though and Black cradles him for the 1-2-3. Afterwards, Kenny King, Jerry Lynn, and Roderick Strong all run out for some more in ring face time.
This was a solid episode with a very entertaining main event match. The video package on Black and Richards was well done also. It was nice to see both men talking candidly about their lives out of character. Tune in again next week for another exciting edition of Ring of Honor on HDNet. Where you can see the future stars of WWE NXT… today.
