Ric Flair may have been the man, but he needs to learn about styling and profiling. Flair’s latest tact has been to attack Bret Hart’s family affairs. The Nature Boy continues to sink to an all-time low, even for the self-proclaimed dirtiest player in the game.
Ric Flair has probably done more damage more to his legacy than anyone has ever blamed throughout his career. Flair has turned into a classless and at times bitter wrestler since leaving the WWE. Ric Flair has turned into Ric Flair’s biggest “mark.” It is almost comical at this point the way he continues to brag about his career.
Flair first went down this road in a home video interview. Flair mentioned having dinner with Diana Hart. Flair than said how horrible of a man that Bret Hart is for things he has done to his family. He even began laughing as he continued to assault Bret for his strained family relations. I love hearing the dirt but even I found this very disturbing to watch.
Apparently this is Flair’s newest promotion because he has continued the assault. In a recent radio interview he said, “He is a pissant in the history of wrestling. He has the nerve to compare himself to me. Let’s get realistic. If you put Bret Hart in your left hand and me in your right hand, compare the career…who is he? I wrestled everybody in the business, for an hour each night. Harley Race, Dory Funk, Jack and Jerry Brisco, who is Bret Hart? He is a legend in his own mind. He lives in his own little world…he screws his own family around. Who is Bret Hart? In my world he is a nobody!” – PWPIX.net
Wow! I don’t even know where to begin. First of all I should say that I am not a big Bret Hart fan. I have been very critical of Bret in the past for things he has said and done. As a matter of a fact I received emails blasting me from personal friends and associates of Bret’s for what I had written. So this is not written from a Bret Hart fan’s point of view.
I am disgusted to even be a fan of Ric Flair the wrestler after hearing his latest rants. If there is one place you don’t go, it is family. In the grand scheme of things, what has Bret really said that is so bad? Bret Hart felt he was overrated. What’s the big deal? There are enough of Flair’s peers that feel otherwise that should make this irrelevant to him.
Ric Flair lives in a bigger bubble than I thought. Not that Bret Hart needs me to defend him, but let’s look at the facts here between Flair and Bret. The fact is Bret got the title from Flair because Flair didn’t draw as WWE champion. Bret than held the WWE title on and off for several years as opposed to Flair’s six-week reign. No matter how you slice it, Bret was more successful in the WWE than Flair was.
For five-years Bret Hart was the top guy or in the mix in the WWE. Ric Flair was the top NWA dog for five years. Yes, Flair wrestled different guys every night around the world. However, Bret had to wrestle and draw in the same cities every six-eight weeks. Bret wrestled in the biggest market in the world. More importantly, Bret Hart had to pick up the pieces of life after Hogan. It is apples and oranges, but in no way is Bret any less of a success than Ric Flair.
Bret often gets criticized about his refusal to drop the belt to Shawn Michaels by Ric Flair. Ric Flair did the same exact thing in 1991 and refused to drop the title to Barry Windham. Unlike Bret, Flair actually took the title with him to the other company (WWE). In the words of Barry Windham himself, “Ric made a joke out of the company and ruined everything we had built.” Ric Flair gets an extremely free pass for this and there are plenty of guys who wrestled in WCW at the time that still don’t understand why.
The family attack is just mind blowing coming from Ric Flair. I don’t know Flair and Hart’s entire family history, nor do I care to. I do know that both men had failed marriages. I know that Flair’s parents gave him up for adoption. I also know that Flair’s son has been arrested numerous times and found with heroin. Why in the world Ric Flair would want to pick a fight family is beyond comprehension to me? It just proves to me that Flair truly does live in a bubble because he can’t recognize his own problems. Who really screwed their family around here?
Additionally, Flair’s continued assault on Bret’s character is hypocritical. Ric Flair has owed more money to the IRS at various times in his career than arguably any other wrestler. Flair’s financial troubles at one time sad have become comical at this stage of his life. I haven’t heard many stories of Bret Hart burning people for money. I can’t say the same for Ric Flair.
There is something more about being the man than wrestling Ricky Steamboat for 60-minutes 6 nights a week. Ric Flair has let a lot of his biggest fans down over the last several years by his words and actions. Attacking someone’s family matters is in the words of Bob Geigel, “Conduct unbecoming of a champion.”
Ric Flair needs to learn a lot about what it truly means to be the man.
