Revamping The WWE Tag Team Division

Kofi Kingston R-TruthDid the WWE tag team belts lose their importance because the talent pool dried up? Or did the talent pool dry up because the belts stopped mattering? Either way, the WWE is allegedly on a quest to revamp a division that has really hit the skids. So far, we’ve seen them turn four singles wrestlers into two solid tag teams.

I am speaking, of course, of the recent pairings of Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne (known as Air Boom, current Tag Team Champs) and The Miz and K-Kwik… I mean R. Truth. This works well (I especially love the Miz and R. Truth) because these are four guys that are pretty over with the crowd but really have nothing to strive for in the singles division right now. Another rumor running rampant around the WWE tag division is the imminent signing of ROH’s the Kings of Wrestling, Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli. I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t follow ROH, or any other independents really (I’m trying to find a way to learn more if anyone has suggestions), but I have read a lot about these guys, and I’m excited to have them join the roster. These guys are a real tag team!

These moves will definitely strengthen the tag division. The Miz and R. Truth have the whole conspiracy angle going for them (they should be named Conspiracy Theory), they are good workers, and are absolute fire on the microphones as heels. Kofi and Bourne don’t really have anything in common, but at least they are both exciting to watch and seem to have good chemistry. Unfortunately, they join a tag division that is truly awful right now.

Who are the other teams in the WWE right now? The Usos are a real tag team, which I like, but thus far they’re about as over as a couple of farts in church. Michael McGillicutty and David Otunga are currently jobbing to a geriatric announcer and his partner of the week (I love Lawler, don’t get me wrong). Who else is left? I can’t consider Reks and Hawkins a real tag team yet, until I see them wrestle a match outside of Superstars, but I’d like to see what they can do…. That’s pretty much it.

I mean, really! Maybe I’m a little spoiled, but I grew up as a little WWF fan watching the likes of The British Bulldogs, the Hart Foundation, Demolition, Strike Force, The Brain Busters, The Nasty Boys, The Rockers, The Steiner Brothers, Money Inc., The Quebeckers, The Head Shrinkers… I can go on and on (some would say I already have). When I was in high school and came back to wrestling (I had strayed for a few years), I came back to The Dudley Boyz, Edge and Christian, the Hardy Boyz, the New Age Outlaws, Too Cool and the Acolytes/APA.

I miss those days. I really hope that Air Boom, Miz and R. Truth, The Kings, and even Reks and Hawkins, give this division a much needed boost. I think, of all of these guys, Miz and Truth have the best shot at lifting the division because they are both very over as heels, and fans want to see them both on the mic and in the ring (at least I do). I think they can make themselves hated enough to get any face team that challenges them popular with the WWE fans, but the WWE needs a real popular face team to take them on. Is Air Boom that team? I don’t know, but I think I know who is.

Here’s my whacky idea, and it might make all of you hate me right off the bat on my first post for the Camel Clutch Blog. How about CM Punk? While I love CM Punk as a World Title contender, at some point WWE creative will have to rotate him out of the main event picture (just for a bit). What if the voice of the voiceless got himself a partner? I know just the guy. He’s one of Punk’s best friends, and he’s known as one of the best indy wrestlers in the country. He was also already held down by HHH and the suits his first time around the WWE.

I’m speaking, of course, about Colt Cabana. CM Punk speaks for the voiceless, so why not tag with the voiceless and take on the new corporation as part of a team? It’s really not as crazy as you think. It would not only keep the tag division on fire, but it would introduce a new talent who deserves a shot, and keep Punk’s angle vs. HHH alive once the singles feud has run its course. Once Cabana is red hot over, Punk can go back to chasing the World Title and Cabana can go after the Intercontinental or United States belts.

Please share with me your thoughts… be nice.
