Game Preview: Boston Red Sox vs. Baltimore Orioles

Chris TillmanThe World Cup betting is heating up, and the Boston Red Sox continue to climb the standings in the AL East. The Red Sox have set the sports betting world on fire lately by winning eight of their last 10 games and moving to within five games of first place Tampa. The Baltimore Orioles are falling in the other direction as they have lost nine of their last 10 and have plummeted to 20 ½ games out of first place.

Normally the MLB betting experts wait until at least July to count the Orioles completely out of the pennant race, but this year it looks like early problems for the birds. This game is not going to be pretty for Orioles fans as the red hot Red Sox come to Camden Yards to continue their climb up the AL East ladder.

Now that favorites such as Serena Williams and Roger Federer are out of the French Open, the French Open betting has become a bit predictable. This game between the Red Sox and the Orioles may not be quite as hard to figure out. The Red Sox have Clay Buchholz starting on the mound, and the Red Sox ace is coming off a May where he went 5-1 on 6 starts.

The Orioles are putting Chris Tillman on the mound. Tillman was asked to fill in the vacant starting rotation position that used to belong to David Hernandez before Hernandez was relegated to the bullpen. Tillman has a 3.18 ERA this season and no wins on one start. His last start was against the Blue Jays where he gave up two home runs before getting pulled.

The Red Sox are riding a wave of momentum that saw them take a series from the Oakland A’s. David Ortiz has found his swing again and has pushed his homerun total to 12 for the season. The Red Sox have vastly improved in the field as they have managed to drop to the third lowest number of total errors in the American League with 29. The Red Sox have only committed two errors in their last five games. They had finished the month of April committing four errors in the last five games of the month.

The Orioles have one of the worst team ERAs in all of baseball at 4.67, and they rank at the top in hits surrendered with 507. They are also second in baseball with 64 home runs given up. The Red Sox are second in all of baseball with 71 home runs hit this season.

The Orioles give up home runs, and the Red Sox hit home runs. Even if the Red Sox chase Tillman early, the Orioles have 10 blown saves this season from a bullpen that cannot find any consistency. The Red Sox are two for two in save opportunities in the last week of play.

There is little to indicate that the Orioles will be able to stop their early season slide, and there is even less to indicate that the Oriole pitching staff will be able to quiet the Red Sox bats throughout this series.

Pick: Boston Red Sox 9-3
