Randy Couture Says UFC Promised Him Fedor’s First Match

All of the talk about Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brock Lesnar may be more premature than we thought. Former UFC champion Randy Couture dropped a bit of a bombshell in regards to Fedor’s first UFC match. Couture says that UFC promised him the first match.

“Not only do I think I deserve a shot at him, it’s kind of part of the agreement in settling our differences in coming back to the UFC, is they were going to be diligent about trying to find a way to make that fight happen.” – Cagewriter

Wow! So here is the deal. Even if UFC can do the impossible and sign Fedor, it won’t be for the Fedor vs. Brock Lesnar Dream Match. This definitely throws a wrinkle into the hopes of many MMA fans. This also explains the sudden turnaround in Dana’s attitude towards Fedor over the last several months.

I think I speak for a lot of MMA fans when I say I have no interest in seeing Fedor vs. Randy Couture at this point. While Randy did hang with Brock Lesnar in the first round of their fight, it was over quick in the second round. I can’t see Randy doing any kind of damage to Fedor Emelianenko at this stage of his career.

But what if UFC finally does get the Fedor Emelianenko deal done? What if UFC jumps the gun and promotes Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brock Lesnar off the top? Randy Couture doesn’t have much leverage at this point in his career. The only possibility of Randy cashing in elsewhere would be a match against Tim Sylvia at best.

Should UFC sign Fedor Emelianenko to a three-fight deal within the next few months, I would have no problem with a Randy match six-months from now. Ideally, UFC could match Fedor Emelianenko vs. Randy Couture, a Lesnar match regardless of the result thereafter, and an open third match against either Frank Mir or a Brock Lesnar rematch.

The bottom line here is if this is true and if it is legally binding, we won’t be seeing Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brock Lesnar in UFC for at least a year. That would undoubtedly work in Lesnar’s favor as he could garner more experience between now and then. I just shudder to think that the last memory UFC fans have of Randy Couture is him hitting the canvas in a first-round knockout.
