Put the WWE Strap on Kevin Owens

The worst possible news for the WWE happened when their champion Seth Rollins seriously injured his knee weeks before the Survivor Series pay-per-view. Rollins is scheduled to miss 6-9 months after surgery. A tournament was announced to crown his successor and that tournament is in full swing, nothing too crazy has happened yet but there’s still time for them to throw a curve ball. This is the perfect opportunity to take a risk. They can play it safe and put Roman Reigns in the finals against Dean Ambrose and have one of those guys turn on the other to set up the next Championship feud. Or they can put the title on a superstar no one is expecting. I vote for options number two.

I’m a huge believer that Reigns needs a heel run before becoming a top star in the WWE. We all know they are all in on him being their next big baby face star so in my eyes a heel turn doesn’t seem realistic right now. In terms of storyline why would Reigns decide to join Triple H after earning his spot in the finals the hard way? If he was going to turn he had to do it when he was offered the spot by Triple H. Unless he suddenly lacked the confidence to win a one-on-one match, I don’t think it would make any sense for him to change his mind during the finals. He’s already made it clear he’s all about putting in the work and earning things the hard way. I can see him being frustrated but ok if he was to lose in the championship match. The guy prides himself on being a hard worker so if he fails he would just dedicate himself even more to attaining that goal. Taking the easy way out clearly isn’t an option for Roman Reigns.

Reigns is in line to get the championship at some point in the near future and the clear favorite to win this tournament at Survivor Series. I recently wrote that I’d prefer to see Reigns win the title at the Royal Rumble and I am going to stick to that. Even under these new circumstances I still really like the idea of a slow burn for Reigns and the title. The more hardship he faces on the road to winning the championship the more fans are going to get behind him. I feel confident he will not turn heel and I believe now is not the right time for him to be champion.

The other option is turning Ambrose heel against Reigns. I think that would be a gigantic mistake. If Ambrose turns on Reigns to win the WWE Championship the fans will cheer him. If he takes Reigns out after losing the match the fans will cheer him. There is absolutely nothing Ambrose can do to get booed by turning on Reigns. Even though I think Ambrose would be an amazing heel turning on Reigns will not get the reaction the WWE would want. The fans would be happy in almost any scenario of him turning on Reigns because they absolutely love Ambrose.

Everyone is expecting something between Reigns and Ambrose to go down so that tells me to do something different. Kevin Owens needs to defeat Ambrose in the final four earning his spot in the finals against Reigns. During the fatal 4-way match to name a new number one contender the fans popped hard when Reigns and Owens went face-to-face. It makes all the sense in the world for KO to be the new Authority champion.

I am sure there are those out there who do not think he’s ready to be the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. I would argue that Rollins was in that same spot when he cashed in his Money in the Bank contract at WrestleMania. They took a chance on him and it was an overall successful title reign. It’s time to take another chance and throw Owens into the fire. KO would fit perfectly as the champion for the Authority. He is a prize fighter who wants to provide for his family so he will do whatever it takes to make that happen. He may not be able to pull off the suit gimmick but I don’t think the Authority’s goon needs to.

I have gone on record many times saying I think Kevin Owens is the best all-around talent in the WWE today. Minus the ideal look which I think is highly overrated, he has it all. He’s a great talker, cuts the best and most creative promos and truly understands the psychology of being a bad guy. No one carries themselves better with a title on their shoulder and adding the World Title to the Intercontinental Title would elevate him to epic status. His stardom would be undeniable. If the WWE wants to make waves, put the strap on Kevin Owens.

To close this out I am going to go on the record and predict that this will not happen and the WWE will have Roman Reigns win the tournament and lose the belt the same night to a Sheamus cash in.
